Senior Director, U.S. Communications

ONE is a global advocacy and campaigning organization backed by more than 2 million people from around the world dedicated to fighting extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. ONE has offices in Washington, DC, London, Berlin and Abuja.  This position will work out of our DC location.

The Senior Director, US Communications will lead the development and implementation of ONE's US communications strategy, including developing messages for the organization and for specific campaigns, strengthening awareness around a clear, distinctive, positive identity for ONE, identifying priority audiences for our communications, identifying appropriate communications vehicles, and ensuring a consistent, high-quality, appropriate delivery of ONE messages in the US.  The Senior Director will oversee a team of four employees and report directly to the US Executive Director. 

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the development and implementation of ONE's US communications strategy, in collaboration with other teams
  • Produce high-quality, consistent, compelling materials for external audiences and ensure all external communications have a consistent tone and presentation to reach identified audiences
  • Ensure that ONE priorities and initiatives are constantly in the public eye across US media markets
  • Oversee the cultivation of contacts with US media - including print, broadcast and online media
  • Lead and develop a team of communications staff and consultants
  • Actively participate on ONE's Leadership Team, working to ensure that effective communications strategies are incorporated into all appropriate elements of ONE's work
  • Remain current on policy issues related to ONE's work

 

 SPECIFIC TYPES OF KNOWLEDGE, SKILL & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Master's degree preferred and at least 7 years experience in strategic communications leadership, including developing and implementing comprehensive communications campaigns
  • Exceptional written and oral communications skills
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing a successful strategy for national communications
  • Solid understanding of print, broadcast, and online media
  • Experience interfacing between communications and policy, a huge plus
  • Experience leading and motivating a team of employees
  • General interest and dedication to the mission of ONE
