Canada Campaign Manager | Fixed-term contract to July 2010

ONE is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to mobilizing public opinion and advocating policies to help the citizens of African and other developing nations fight extreme poverty and preventable disease.  We have offices in Washington, DC, London, Berlin and Abuja. 

ONE is looking for a Canada Campaign Manager to co-ordinate its policy, advocacy, campaigning, and media efforts focused on Canada's hosting of the G8 and G20 summits in 2010.  The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of the international development advocacy environment, a good understanding of Canada's role in international development, contacts within the Canadian government, and a strong commitment to development issues.  The candidate should be a team player who can also operate independently.  This role will be based in Canada, preferably Toronto or Ottawa, or in Washington, DC with regular travel between to and from Washington, DC, as well as some possible travel to our London office.

Principal duties and responsibilities:

  • Project manage ONE's campaigning and advocacy efforts in Canada in 2010
  • Act as ONE's first point of contact in Canada
  • Develop and liaise with political and NGO contactsin Canada
  • Develop relationships with Canadian influencers
  • Liaise with ONE staff to coordinate with Canadian media and conduct media monitoring and to develop and pitch story ideas on issues relating to the G20 and G8 Summits
  • Track Canada's aid budget process
  • Provide regular briefings to the project team on Canada's policies towards Africa including HIV/AIDS, education, development assistance, child & maternal health, trade, debt relief and governance and contribute to the development of ONE's policy proposals in these areas
  • Help to devise creative ideas for raising the profile of these issues in the public domain in Canada
  • Support travel arrangements and organize schedules and logistics for senior ONE staff as necessary
  • Organize internal and external meetings where required, coordinating meeting logistics as needed
  • Coordinate on all Canada work with ONE staff and subject matter experts, as well as ONE's other consultant on-the-ground in Canada
  • Provide general support to the wider ONE team at peak moments that relate to ONE's Canada work as required

Knowledge, skill, and experience required:

  • An excellent understanding of the Canadian political environment and official decision-making processes
  • Excellent contacts with the current government in Canada
  • Excellent understanding of the main Canadian political institutions processes
  • Knowledge of Canadian NGOs, particularly those working on development issues
  • Well organized with excellent time management and prioritization skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and good attention to detail
  • Knowledge of development issues
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced and sometimes unpredictable environment
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment whenbased independently
  • Proven researching ability
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office: Outlook, Calendar, Word, Excel
  • Experience in project management and event organization is desirable
  • An interest in Africa and a commitment to ONE's mission
