SENIOR DIRECTOR, NEW MEDIA

ONE is a global advocacy and campaigning organization backed by more than 2 million people from around the world dedicated to fighting extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. ONE has offices in Washington, DC, London, Berlin, Brussels, and Abuja.  This position will be based in ONE's Washington, DC office. 

The Senior Director, New Media is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive, global online strategy and for ensuring ONE's new media platform enhances its overall effectiveness in the following areas:  branding, communications, campaigning, and membership development.  The new media director is responsible for leading and managing ONE's team of online communications and campaigning professionals who operate ONE's web platform, develop its content, and promote it, both online and off.  The Senior Director, New Media is responsible for all aspects of ONE's digital presence, including ONE.org and related websites, the ONE Blog, and web- and email-based campaigns.   The Senior Director, New Media is also responsible for ONE's use of social networks, mobile technology, and for technology vendors and partnerships.  This is a senior leadership position within ONE.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create and execute a new media strategy that is in alignment with ONE's goals and priorities, with a particular emphasis on online activism and membership recruitment and cultivation
  • Work with the Chief Marketing Officer to ensure ONE's online presence expresses and enhances ONE's branding and positioning
  • Work with the Executive Director of US Advocacy and the European Deputy Director, respectively, to ensure ONE's online presence and use of new media help achieve its policy and advocacy objectives
  • Help plan and direct the online components of broad based campaigns across the new media platform including web, email, social networks, mobile, and video
  • Plan and execute online-only campaigns across the new media platform including web, email, social networks, mobile, and video
  • Work with the field team to ensure ONE's technology platform and tools support ONE's field work, offline organizing, and volunteers/grassroots
  • Work with the government relations team to ensure ONE's technology platform and tools support ONE's legislative work
  • Design and execute a website content strategy in collaboration with the US and EU advocacy teams
  • Oversee ONE's web and email communication strategy, ensuring consistency in voice and narrative, with an emphasis on developing and integrating partner content
  • Manage ONE's entire public technology platform, including hardware, software, and web applications; ensure ONE's content and data are fully secure and properly backed up
  • Help to identify and manage strategic partnerships with high tech and new media companies
  • Lead and motivate a talented team of multi-disciplined employees who are responsible for content, online campaigns, web design, and web development
  • Create a culture of rigorous testing and data collection and analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of online efforts and to determine how best to invest limited resources in future efforts
  • Select and manage technology and new media vendors
  • Track the efforts and best practices of other online campaigns, both cause-related and product related, and incorporate them into ONE's practices
  • Proactively think about creative and innovative online communications and campaigning approaches and tools
  • Be a leader internally in terms of educating ONE's staff about online strategies and creative and innovative online campaigning approaches

 SPECIFIC TYPES OF KNOWLEDGE, SKILL & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Bachelor's degree and at least five years experience in online communications, campaigning, and/or membership
  • Proven ability to develop and manage a major public facing online presence with multiple properties and extensive content and digital assets
  • Significant experience and understanding of the technical side of hosting and managing a major web presence, including internet architecture, database design and administration, engineering/application development, content management, CMS, security, etc.
  • Significant experience leading and managing large scale online campaigning/activism, including experience managing and growing a very large email list
  • Significant experience in developing and managing effective websites for international audiences; understanding of how the web and email are different outside the United States
  • Significant experience successfully leading and managing a team with diverse skill sets

  • Exceptional verbal, written, and online communication skills, including email writing and editing
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
