ONE is a global advocacy and campaigning organization backed by more than 2 million people from around the world dedicated to fighting extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. ONE has offices in Washington, DC, London, Berlin and Abuja. This position will work out of our DC location, under the direction of the Director of Organizational Development and Effectiveness.
The Senior Project Manager's objective is to help ONE be more efficient and effective in how it manages projects and how it collaborates across teams and offices. This position will oversee the execution of cross-cutting organizational projects for internal, operational initiatives and special projects with external / field components. Examples of projects include coordinating internal initiatives, to executing our G8/G20 strategy, and on occasion to managing even larger projects such as a "global moment" like the UN Week in New York. The expectation for this position is that projects will be delivered according to plan and in a collaborative, creative, and timely manner that draws upon the organization's unique talent and resources and that the organization can successfully take on multiple projects at any given time without sacrificing quality or risking staff burnout. This position will report directly to the Director of Organizational Development and Effectiveness and shall be responsible for assisting the director with various internally focused projects, as needed.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Deliver ONE's project management program by managing projects, supporting projects as an "internal consultant," and by training staff on project management and project management best practices
- Provide coaching and guidance to enable project teams to strike a balance between project planning and discipline while allowing for continued innovation and creativity
- Evaluate projects for their effectiveness; convene project teams following the completion of a project to celebrate what went well and to capture lessons learned
- Work with the US and EU-based Project Managers to develop and manage a global view of projects across the organization. This global view will include tracking all initiatives within the organization, identifying areas for collaboration and coordination, identifying/resolving complementary or conflicting deadlines across projects, and checking in with project managers on a consistent basis
- Develop and execute an internal communications strategy that identifies how best to communicate about project management and the ongoing status of projects across the organization
- Develop tools and techniques for managing staff resources, with a focus on how best to staff projects; to include exploration of online tracking and availability tools as part of the intranet
- Build and "socialize" internal best practices to ensure the proper delivery of projects, including:
- How to establish clear project strategies with clear goals and objectives
- How to identify aggressive, yet realistic success measures
- How to create project work plans and project-based budgets
- How to facilitate buy-in and decision making among project team members
- How to monitor project plans, resolve issues, and change direction, as needed
- How to manage Project Teams, including clearly establishing (and reinforcing) clear (and appropriate) project roles
- How to conduct end-of-project debriefs, collect project success stories and lessons learned
- Help design and lead the development of project management training classes, including the refinement of the Project Management 101 introductory class and the creation of a more detailed "advanced" curriculum
- Identify external resources for learning, training, and professional development as it relates to project management
- Support and train project managers on these project management best practices and principles so that they can successfully manage projects without an overreliance on the project management team
- Help each team within the organization understand how the organization's project load will impact their team's work plans
Depending upon organizational and capacity needs, the Senior Project Manager may be assigned up to 1-3 projects, varying in scope and complexity, at any given time and be accountable for managing each project's day-to-day operations and path to success.
SPECIFIC TYPES OF KNOWLEDGE, SKILL & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- Bachelor's degree and at least eight years of strong project management experience and proven project management skills
- Experience in developing and managing teams
- Experience managing projects from an oversight perspective (as opposed to strictly executing projects)
- Strong organization skills; proven ability to multi-task
- Understanding of organizational dynamics and how organizations work (or don't work) and how they grow and change
- Superb written and spoken communications skills
- Proficient meeting management skills and experienced presenter
- Self-starter who can work independently
- Strong sense of teamwork and collaboration
- Ability to think critically and independently
