ONE's U.S. Legislative Agenda

In 2008, ONE members rallied across America to urge the candidates to make bold commitments in the fight against global disease and extreme poverty. In January, President Obama entered the Oval Office, having made the most significant promises to fight extreme poverty of any American President in history- he pledged to double U.S. foreign assistance from $25b to $50b during his presidency.  Now, ONE's U.S. legislative agenda is to help turn these promises into reality.

Our top priority for 2009 is to increase poverty-fighting aid by $4 billion to put the president on track to keep his promise. More importantly, this funding would begin to deliver the results in health, education, and economic development that President Obama articulated. We are also seeking reform and elevation of U.S. development assistance structures to improve efficiency, coordination and results.

We are also encouraging the president and Congress to launch new initiatives such as treating the sick, helping to put every child in school, ending deaths by malaria, and improving food security through greater agricultural development. We will pursue opportunities to support other timely and effective initiatives as they arise.

U.S. government spending is decided every year and the planning is done a year ahead. So this year, we are actually advocating spending for 2010. Our task is to secure new laws and new dollars directed towards helping people to survive and lift themselves out of poverty.  We will accomplish this through specific actions during the congressional budget, appropriations and authorization processes described below.
