During his statement to Parliament following the G8 Summit, the Prime Minister announced his intention to hold a ‘major event on hunger during the Olympics’. This follows President Obama’s announcement of a new alliance on food security and nutrition at the G8. Welcoming the news Adrian Lovett, Europe Executive Director of anti-poverty campaign group ONE, said: “It’s great to see that the Prime Minister will build on President Obama’s bold beginning and develop a sustained global effort to break the cycle of hunger and poverty..." Today the Queen delivered her speech to Parliament setting out the Government’s agenda for the coming session. The Queen repeated the Government’s pledge to give 0.7% of annual national income in international aid from next year. However the Government’s commitment – included in the Coalition Agreement – to introduce legislation to invest this amount in aid annually was not included in the speech. More
