As aid agencies warn more than 9 million people could be affected by a food crisis in East Africa, a new report published today by anti-poverty group ONE shows that world leaders are failing to keep their 2009 promises to tackle the causes of chronic hunger and support farmers in the world's poorest countries. World leaders have promised a remarkable $4.3 billion over the next five years to support the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) in their drive to save lives by making new and underused vaccines available in the world's poorest countries. ONE, the global anti-poverty advocacy group, announced today that its Board of Directors has appointed journalist and editor Michael Elliott to serve as President and CEO of ONE, effective August 1. Elliott succeeds Joshua Bolten, ONE board member and former Chief of Staff to President Bush, who had been serving as interim CEO during ONE's search. The board also named anti-poverty activist Adrian Lovett as ONE's new Europe Executive Director, reporting to Elliott. More

G8 leaders have shown a lack of courage in failing to agree concrete measures to support African citizens' efforts to build a stronger continent, says anti-poverty group ONE. As a result, they risk undermining the huge progress that has been made across Africa over recent years which has led to 46.5 million more children attending school and prevented the deaths of 5.4 million children thanks to routine vaccinations.
