  • ONE'S ANALYSIS OF THE G8 MUSKOKA SUMMIT STATEMENTS

    2 July 2010

On June 25th and 26th, the G8 met in Muskoka Canada, ahead of the G20 Summit in Toronto, Canada. Global development issues on the G8's agenda included maternal, newborn and child health, food security, and accountability. Although the G8 made targeted progress in these areas and expressed critical support for a partnership based on mutual accountability to meet the Millennium Development Goals by 2015, their plan to tackle maternal and child health lacked both ambition and clarity, and their focus on accountability stopped short of calling on countries who have not yet delivered on commitments to do so urgently.

Not only does 2010 mark the final deadline for the historic 2005 G8 commitments, it also leaves just five years to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. In September, the G8 and G20 will join other world leaders in New York for a high-level summit at the United Nations, where they will review progress towards the MDGs. There they must adopt a new strategy centered more around accountability, transparency and poverty-reducing economic growth to accelerate progress towards the MDGs. More

  • Climate financing and Development - Friends or foes?

    26 Jan. 2010

There are clear overlaps but also important differences between the objectives and activities classified under Official Development Assistance (ODA) and financial flows to help developing countries address climate change (i.e. climate finance). The extent to which ODA is diverted from traditional development activities towards mitigating and adapting to climate change in developing countries has important implications. Such implications include how countries are able to reduce poverty and achieve economic growth through development but also how countries are able to cope with a changing climate. More
