On October 16-18 2009 ONE members stood up, literally rising from a seated or squatting position, against extreme poverty. They joined an amazing 173 million people around the world in a new world record.
Stand Up is annual global event, where people around the world stand up as a demonstration of their commitment in the fight against extreme poverty. It’s the easiest of actions, but when 173 million of us do it together, as we did this year, it’s a profound statement.
After we joined with people globally this year, thousands of us took to our keyboards to spread the word and make sure the rest of the world knew that this was a time to get on your feet and make some noise. Facebook was the biggest source of action, with thousands of people asking their friends to stand up, including over 6000 who joined ONE for the first time. Twitter was similarly a-buzz with 1625 members tweeting about standing up and asking their friends to do the same.
Stand Up took many forms, with Bono asking a packed Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in the United States to Stand Up against global poverty during the U2 show there.
Stand Up 2009 was an amazing success, smashing last year's record with an amazing 173 million people standing up worldwide!
Thanks to all the ONE members who took action and let the world know that we are willing to take a stand against extreme poverty.
