91,000 ONE members signed our petition asking the G8 to deliver on their commitments to the world's poorest countries. Combined with our petition asking the G8 to take immediate action in response to the hunger crisis, we delivered a total of more than 200,000 ONE member signatures to the G8 leaders. We were joined by other campaigns around the world, for a total of more than one million people around the world calling on the G8 to address the growing challenges facing the world's poorest during the food crisis.
Stopping the G8 from backsliding on their commitments was a significant victory, but it wasn't the one we hoped for. They did make some small steps forward, but the one that would have been the most significant in the midst of the food crisis -- setting a timeline for delivering on their $10 billion in agricultural development commitments -- was ignored. The G8 did set a timeline for delivering on their $60 billion commitment to fight global disease. But the five year timeline is not very ambitious, especially considering that the United States is already set to delivery $48 billion in this same time period.
African development was again the subject of G8 discussions as world leaders gathered in Toyako, Hokkaido in northern Japan from July 7-9 for the 2008 G8 Summit.
