2009 ONE Africa Award
The Winner:
Slums Information Development and Resources Centres (SIDAREC)
Founded by a group of young people from the slums, SIDAREC focuses on uplifting the standard of living of the youth living in Kenya's slum communities by tapping into their skills and talents. The slums that SIDAREC operates in were spared in the post-election violence in large part because residents had, through SIDAREC, an outlet for getting their voices heard. Innovative approaches include the use of drama, art and Ghetto 99.9 FM radio to reach residents with development-oriented information.
Since SIDAREC received their 2009 ONE Award their profile has been significantly raised both in Kenya and across the continent. The program regularly receives visitors and many colleges and universities have sent students to SIDAREC for internships. The ONE Award has also allowed SIDAREC to expand many of their initiatives, including their early childhood development and HIV/AIDS support programs.

AGHA is an indigenous NGO founded to mobilize health professionals and health consumers to address issues of human rights in the health sector. AGHA brings together doctors, nurses and other professionals to create local and national networks dedicated to health advocacy.
Esoko (Formally TradeNet) - Ghana
Esoko strives to change the information asymmetry that traps small farmers in poverty by delivering up-to-date price information on mobile phones. Using this and other technology, Esoko aims to change how markets work in Africa, empowering small farmers and governments with critical, accessible and timely information.
FATE Foundation - Nigeria
FATE Foundation was established by a group of Nigerians to respond to the challenges of unemployment and extreme poverty prevalent in Nigerian society. FATE fosters wealth creation by promoting business and entrepreneurial development among Nigerian youth.
Forum for Africa Women Educationalists - Ghana Chapter
FAWE Ghana’s mission is to promote gender equity and equality in education, with a special emphasis on girls. Programs strive to correct gender disparities in education, change negative societal attitudes and empower women to be part of the development process and work towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
Mmbozi, Ileje, and Isangati Consortium - Tanzania
MIICO was founded to help rural poor communities in Tanzania to improve their livelihood and living standards through capacity building and advocacy training. The organization has empowered and equipped networks of smallholder farmers with entrepreneurship skills and production knowledge to enable them to spearhead their own socio-economic development.
The AIDS Support Organization - Uganda
Founded by HIV activists, TASO provides HIV prevention, care, treatment, social support and training services to people affected and infected by HIV and AIDS.
