The 2010 UK general election, which took place on 6 May, was the closest in a generation. In the midst of an economic crisis and with a MP expenses scandal that has deepened anger towards politicians, ONE Vote 2010 asked voters what they want from their next government.
The UK is recognised globally as a leader in international development and in 2010 this leadership will be needed more than ever: It is 10 years since the historic Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were agreed, 5 years until they are due to be delivered, and the year when the football World Cup comes to Africa for the first time.
It is vital at this time that the world does not weaken its commitment to tackle global poverty. British cross-party consensus to spend 0.7% of Gross National Income by 2013 on aid is important and the UK’s aid spending is already having a huge positive impact.
The remarkable generosity and concern shown towards Haiti has shown that people in the UK still care about global issues – the challenge is how to do even better in the future.
