The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is an independent financing mechanism that invests donor resources to save lives. Governments, NGOs, civil society and the private sector work together to produce and implement country-driven and -monitored proposals aimed at prevention, care and treatment. These proposals are vetted by an independent technical review panel that approves technically sound programs with the greatest chances of success. Since its creation in 2002, the Global Fund has approved $11.4 billion to support prevention, treatment and care programs for HIV, tuberculosis and malaria. As a result, the Global Fund has already saved an estimated 2.5 million lives.
However, the volume of high-quality proposals is outpacing the donor contributions available to fund them. The Global Fund now projects a total need for 2009-2010 of $8 billion in order to renew grants for highly effective ongoing programmes and to make new funds available for new proposals. The Fund does not have a formal full replenishment conference again until 2010, so has called a mid-term review meeting from March 30th through April 1st, 2009 in Cáceres, Spain to discuss these needs.
ONE is working to encourage donor countries to keep or increase their existing pledges so the Global Fund can continue its successful fight against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
