St. John Neumann’s Catholic Church in Reston, VA took a stand against poverty this past Sunday – in two different languages!
Hundreds of parishioners read the Stand Up Pledge after the morning Mass in English and then en español after the Spanish Mass in the afternoon. This bilingual action reflects the diversity of people coming together as one in the fight against poverty in this country and around the world. Erin Tunney and Damian Gullo coordinated the events at St. John Neumann’s to stand with millions of people worldwide who are committed to realizing the Millennium Development Goals.
Today millions of people around the world are literally standing up as a demonstration of their commitment to fight for the poorest people in the world. And just as you’d expect, ONE members are getting in on the action. We’ve already reported on a series of events taken place, which you can read about here.

Yesterday I joined Miami ONE Members, University of Miami students and local community members to take a stand against poverty. This year ONE Miami joined with igKnite, a student group from UM to host an awareness event about the challenges of extreme poverty and the importance of achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
Throughout the night we heard from several speakers and many different artists, each with a unique message about hope and the importance of effective anti-poverty programs. It was an amazing event and all who attended seemed inspired and ready to take an action – whether it be attending a meeting with a member of Congress or simply spreading the word to friends and colleagues about the importance of this fight to make a better, safer world for all.

Stand Up and Take Action is fast approaching. On October 16th, 17th, and 18th, millions of people around the world will Stand Up and Take Action for the fourth year in a row to show their support for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the fight against poverty. This global event is coordinated by the UN Millennium Campaign and GCAP, and you better believe that ONE is going to be a part of it again this year.
From coast to coast, ONE members are Standing Up. Take Atlanta, Georgia for example. In collaboration with CARE, ONE members are hosting an exciting evening in Atlanta on Saturday, October 17. The event will be hosted by CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield and two of the world’s most prominent global health experts – Dr. Thomas Frieden, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and Dr. Helene Gayle, CEO of CARE. This informative and entertaining night will feature live music, food, a microfinance marketplace, and more. Plus, attendees will have the opportunity to help those in developing countries by urging support from elected officials. Learn more and RSVP here.

ONE members visited Senator Feinstein’s San Diego office to thank her for her support of legislation related to fulfillment of the Millennium Development Goals. Seated in a conference room with Field Representative Laura McGann, we voiced special appreciation for the Senator Feinstein’s re-authorization of PEPFAR, support for the Lugar-Casey Global Food Security Act and most recently endorsement of the “Water for the World” Act. After hand delivering a petition signed by over 16,000 Californians and visiting her offices around the state, Senator Feinstein recently co-sponsored Water for the World Act of 2009.
Recognizing the disproportionate impact climate change has on the poor, we requested Senator Feinstein work to direct 5% of the revenue from current and future climate related legislation to assisting the poorest on our planet. We look forward to a new open door with Laura in the future and always enjoy working with other ONE members. This year ONE Miami is partnering with IgKnite, a student group at the University of Miami, to host a Stand Up and Take Action event to help raise awareness about extreme poverty around the world and call attention to the millions of people who die from preventable and treatable diseases like HIV/AIDS and malaria. The event will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the University of Miami’s School of Communications Courtyard.
The Miami event will be one of thousands across the world that are occurring over the Oct. 16 weekend as part of a globally coordinated effort by the United Nations Millennium Campaign to raise awareness about poverty and remind world leaders about the importance of achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). With billions of people living on just dollars a day around the world, global poverty remains one of the greatest challenges and tragedies the international community faces.
