Members of ONE were in Marshalltown Iowa to meet and greet Fred Thompson and his wife Jeri. We got our seats right behind Fred as he delivered his remarks. The Fox News channel was there to catch the action as ONE members were right in view during the closing segment of the Fox Report with Shepard Smith.
Afterwards, the former Tennessee senator graciously posed for photos and took a band saying it was good to see us again. A high-level staff member from Fred’s campaign peered from the convoy right before departure to recognize the ONE Campaign and request a band.
As I went over to the vehicle to deliver the band, another member of the Thompson team leaned forward to let me know he wears his band everywhere. It was great to see their enthusiasm for ONE right before they sped off to the next stop.

ONE staff drove to Waterloo, IA, to see Gov. Tommy Thompson at Beck’s Sports Bar and Grill. Gov. Thompson is in the middle of his intense 99-county tour before our state’s August 11th Straw Poll.
At the event, ONE members asked him about his plans, if elected, to continue his previous work as Secretary of Health and Human Services, advocating for the issues of global poverty and disease. Gov. Thompson spoke about a program he and former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan created to fight disease in 135 countries. He also spoke about his desire to rid the planet of malaria and how attainable the goal is.
After, Gov. Thompson chatted with ONE members and thanked us for our questions. He restated his strong desire to eradicate malaria and told us how much he liked ONE. He ended with a thumbs up and told us to keep up the good work!

I’m heading over to Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, CA, to watch the ten Republican presidential candidates enter their first debate of the 2008 elections.
Taking stage will be: Senator Sam Brownback of Kansas, former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, Representative Duncan Hunter of California, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, former Wisconsin Governor and U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson, Senator John McCain of Arizona, Representative Ron Paul of Texas, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Representative Tom Tancredo of Colorado.
We all want to hear about where the candidates stand on the issues surrounding extreme poverty, and you can still do your part by voting for this question to be asked at tonight’s debate: “Studies have found strong correlations between mass literacy and the presence of democratic political systems. What role would the expansion of primary education in the poorest parts of the world play in your national security platform?”
Watch tonight at 8pm EST on MSNBC, local NBC affiliates and streamed live on Politico.com, and stayed tuned for more notes from the field.
