Alterna-rockers and longtime ONE supporters Daughtry have been doing some major representing for ONE this past week — and we wanted to take the chance to thank them here on the ONE blog.

Although the band has a seriously crazy schedule filled with press interviews, TV appearances, gigs and all the trappings of fame and stardom, they’ve always found the time to express their commitment to ending extreme poverty and preventable disease.

Just last Friday, lead guitarist Josh Steely proudly wore his ONE shirt during the band’s performance on the “Today” show — and even spoke about ONE’s mission and advocacy efforts in a Web-exclusive video interview for the show’s music series, Backstage Pass.

And this week, celebrity gossip blog PopEater came out with an awesome multimedia story on a day in the life of Daughtry. Scrolling through the video and photos, we were absolutely psyched to see that lead vocalist Chris Daughtry sported a ONE band throughout the day.

Take a look at the videos and if you have the chance, send a Tweet to Daughtry and thank ‘em for supporting ONE.

“Small but might”. That was the theme for my first ONE volunteer effort Tuesday evening at the Daughtry concert at the Sprint Center in my hometown of Kansas City, Missouri. I met up with Libby, our Regional Field Director, and two other volunteers to spread the word about ONE to excited Daughtry fans. As we were getting ready the band walked by and waved hello to ONE members and thanked us for being there! We were lucky enough to get a picture with the guys before the show and each band member demonstrated his appreciation of ONE and the volunteers for the evening with a big hug for each of us and a sincere thank you for all that ONE does on behalf of the world’s poorest people.

The importance of Daughtry’s support of ONE’s vision was obvious as we began interacting with the concert goers, too. Before long, another several hundred members had eagerly pledged their support, with the majority coming from fellow ONE newbie, Cory.

It was so rewarding to be a part of engaging others in the fight against extreme poverty and preventable diseases. It’s proof, once again, that a small group of dedicated individuals can make a difference. If you haven’t joined ONE yet, I definitely recommend looking for a volunteer opportunity in your area. I promise you’ll be hooked. I know I am!

Considering that Minnesotans traditionally volunteer at higher rates than the national average, ONE Twin Cities members were met with a receptive audience. After fairly brief and engaging conversations, concertgoers cheerfully pledged their support, and sported their new ONE wristbands!

Although each volunteer has a unique voice, unique words, unique story to tell, sharing Bono’s words captures the essence of their messages: “These goals—clean water for all; school for every child; medicine for the afflicted, an end to extreme and senseless poverty—these are not just any goals; they are the Millennium Development goals, which this country supports. And they are more than that. They are the Beatitudes for a Globalised World.”

ONE volunteers are proud to have added another 231 members this week and thank their fellow Minnesotans for sharing in the vision!

Eight volunteers brought their energy and enthusiasm to encourage fans to make a stand against poverty and preventable disease. Over the course of about three hours, hundreds of DAUGHTRY fans from far and wide signed up over 365 new ONE members!

Volunteers gave out wristbands, stickers, pins, info booklets and flyers about an upcoming ONE workshop in Phoenix. DAUGHTRY fans were excited to sign up. In typical ONE fashion, those who joined came from all walks of life. Our first sign-up was a server from Saddle Ranch, and another was one of the arena security guards.

It’s no question that Arizonans are concerned about the moral obligations and national security implications of extreme poverty. Stable countries are able to meet the basic needs for their citizens to ensure international and cross border stability. Many people do not realize that 1.4 billion people around the world are not living under stable conditions. Last week at the DAUGHTRY concert, we added over 300 members to join ONE in an effort to make sure we do something about it. We will continue to make an impact on the hearts and minds of Arizonans at concerts, town halls, and around communities to make sure we grow the ONE membership base.

I have been helping with the ONE campaign for a while now, but yesterday was my first time signing people up at a large scale event. What better way to start than at the Savemart Center in Fresno for a Daughtry concert?

ONE Fresno/Clovis took a group of 20 people, all passionate about ONE, to invite others to join. All of us, clipboards and wrist bands in hand, walked up and down the lines before the show, letting people know that their voices can make a difference. There were 6,500 people attending the concert and quite a few were very receptive to the mission of making poverty history.

Once the doors opened we set up a table inside and circled the arena spreading the word. All of us went out with the utmost dedication and enthusiasm rejoicing over every sheet we filled, and every wrist band placed on another person’s arm. In the end we signed up 674 people to join ONE in the fight against global poverty. I am proud to say that I was a part of something so spectacular and downright fun, and I can’t wait for the next opportunity to help!
