You heard it here first, folks. ONE is joining forces with Chegg, a leading social education platform for students, in a nationwide search to send eight all-star student advocates on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Africa. This unique internship program and trip will be an opportunity to become fully immersed in the issues faced by millions living on less than $1.25 a day in sub-Saharan Africa. You will get to experience the fight against extreme poverty and disease from the frontlines -– and come back fully energized to lead your peers as the next generation of advocates on campuses across the country.

Here’s how it works: let us know in 500 words or less why you should be one of eight lucky interns to experience the fight against extreme poverty in action with us and Chegg’s new social change arm, Chegg for Good, in Africa this summer. We want to know why you’re passionate about these issues and what you’re doing on campus right now to fight poverty -– whether in Africa or right here in your own community.

The top 50 applicants will be thrown into a public voting round, where you will have the chance to rally your friends, family and social networks to vote for you.

And from there, we’ll pick 20 finalists to come to Washington, D.C., in April, where you will spend a few days meeting with your members of Congress and proving to us you’ve got that special something to become one of eight headed on a jet plane to Africa this summer.

Think you got what it takes? Head over to Chegg for Good for more information and to submit your application.

APPLY HERE NOW

Ask yourself one question: Are you the ONE?

This week, ONE Campus is challenging students to eat on less than $1.50 a day. To read more updates like these, head to ONE Campus’ Tumblr.

Presently, serious cuts to the funding of foreign aid programs within the 150 account, the International Affairs portion of the Federal Budget that encompasses foreign aid, have been proposed by Congress for the 2012 fiscal year. In response, ONE members across the country –- from Nebraska to New Jersey — are getting motivated and participating in the ONE Campus Challenge’s second challenge to stop these devastating cuts to foreign aid.

One University of Florida student answers the question: how does living on less than $1.50 a day relate to the 150 account?

By living under the conditions of extreme poverty, ONE members at the University of Florida are, for a short time, experiencing first-hand the conditions that 1.4 billion around the world face every day, driving the point home that the programs affected by proposed cuts make a tremendous difference in the lives of vulnerable populations in the developing world. Programs like Feed the Future aim to increase food security to prevent future famines like the current crisis in the Horn of Africa.

Every time I get hungry or I get a whiff of Chipotle (which seems to be wafting toward campus more than ever), or I forget that I’m participating in the challenge and reach for a piece of the Halloween candy that is all over my house, or I get tired of eating ramen noodles, I remember the 1.4 billion people who will not get to feast on Thursday when the challenge ends. That’s my motivation for writing letters and making phone calls to our elected officials in support of the 150 account.

University of Florida students and alumni in Gainesville, Washington DC and even India are participating in ONE-UF’s challenge to live off of $1.50 per day for five days. Follow us on Tumblr, and let us know what you think of our progress. Are you taking the challenge as well? It would be great to hear how it has impacted you, too. ?

-UF Alumni Lee Zeiche, Washington, D.C.

Last Thursday night, the ONE Washington, D.C., interns hosted a “ONE Night of Living Proof” happy hour event on Capitol Hill to spread the word about extreme poverty and attract new ONE members.

We reached out to other interns in the city and introduced them to the ONE Campus Challenge (OCC), ONE’s college branch, which allows college students to connect with ONE by starting a ONE chapter at their school and using their voice on behalf of the world’s poorest people.

Interns from Congressional offices, USAID and organizations such as Amnesty International and the United Nations Foundation attended the event.

US Executive Director Sheila Nix and Chief Marketing Officer Jeff Davidoff spoke to the crowd about how and why ONE works, adding their inspirational energy into the event and adding to its success. They discussed ONE’s campaigns and the value of using your voice to advocate for effective aid programs. Our US field team intern Colton Davis also shared his experiences as an OCC leader at Drake University, where he has led students in advocating for effective international development. It was clear that many guests were excited about our work and interested in getting involved.

The event was a huge success, attracting more than 120 new members and 20 potential new OCC leaders! The interns had the opportunity to talk to like-minded students about what ONE does, the OCC and our fabulous experiences working here.

Welcome new ONE members! We look forward to seeing the new OCC chapters in action!

This year, our campus students brought in 7,000 new ONE Campus Challenge members, generated 8,000 petition-signers and wrote more than 4,000 letters to Congress. Across the nation, students took action and made a tremendous impact on the lives of the world’s poorest people. In addition to the OCC Grand Prize winners, this year we’ve decided to select three individual prize winners for their outstanding work.

Sarah, Conor and Domonique, winners of our ONE Campus Individual Awards

The winners of this year’s ONE Campus Individual Awards are:

ONE Campus Advocate of the Year — Conor Leary, freshman campus leader at the University of Delaware. Conor worked unbelievably hard to make sure his entire campus got active when it came tissue of extreme poverty and disease. He even hosted Senator Chris Coons for a lively forum that offered a lot of great info about foreign aid and the federal budget. Congrats, Conor!

ONE Campus Leader of the Year–Domonique Worship at the University of Florida. Domonique helped build her school into one of the strongest OCC chapters in the country. She led letter-writing campaigns, hosted can’t-be-missed events, and executed an outstanding final project—all while training a new Campus leader before she graduates. Congrats, Domonique!

ONE Campus Writing & Research Prize–Sarah Hunter at Boston University. Sarah’s paper Water Privatization in Africa—which discusses the challenges of standardizing water purification and distribution in sub-Saharan Africa—was impressive to read, and really informative. Read the whole paper here. Congrats, Sarah!

Besides eternal bragging rights, our winners will receive some special media attention and some awesome ONE gear.

Still wondering how you can stay involved over the summer break? Never fear: OCC still has another exciting opportunity for students this summer! Studying abroad? Volunteering in the developing world? Have a cool internship? Bring a camera and participate in our Summer Photo Challenge! While you’re taking a well deserved summer break, take some captivating photos that speak to ONE’s issues.

Though hundreds of campuses participated in Season 4 of the ONE Campus Challenge and proved their mettle month after month, there was one campus that stood out above the rest. The University of Michigan – Ann Arbor took the title as the top poverty-fighting university in the country! Check out their winning video:

The University of Michigan’s “Food Fight” campaign rallied their campus and community in the fight against extreme poverty and specifically, global hunger. They delivered 1,000 custom ONE coffee sleeves across campus to raise visibility, took over campus common areas, and concluded their efforts with an educational dinner and karaoke night. With 885 letters, 116 phone calls, and 150 petition signatures, they successfully rallied more than 1150 voices together in the fight against global hunger.

As OCC winners, University of Michigan students will be heading to ONE headquarters in D.C. to get an insider’s look at ONE’s work in the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease. While they’re in town they’ll help plan next season’s OCC and meet with their elected officials on Capitol Hill. Then they’ll hit the road with us to Philadelphia to see U2′s show!

Join me in congratulating the Wolverines!

While waking up at the crack of dawn on a weekend isn’t exactly anyone’s favorite pastime, our dedicated intern team showed up in full-force Sunday morning, excited and ready to cheer on the 15,900 participants (including ONE staffers and interns) in the DC Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run.

Cheering from various mile markers (at the starting line, the 5-mile mark and nearing the finish line) we held up banners and shouted words of encouragement to the runners while sharing uplifting facts about progress in the developing world from our Living Proof campaign.

ONE interns Tamara Coger and Jack Breslauer ran in the race and commented on the encouragement they received from fellow ONE supporters. “Multiple people cheering on the sidelines or handing out water commented on my ONE shirt. It was so encouraging to know that so many people know who we are and are supportive of our cause. The rest of the interns made an amazing cheerleading squad,” said Tamara. “I know I wasn’t the only runner who was extra motivated by their support. They definitely stood out in the crowd and so did our message.”

“A bunch of runners would give me shouts of encouragement or a high-five when they saw my ONE shirt, and each one gave me a little morale boost that helped me get over the finish line alive!” said Jack.

The feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive and was above-and-beyond anything we imagined. Both runners and spectators voiced their approval and support for our positive messages, and many gave ONE special shout outs as they ran by. The staffers and interns who participated in the race donned their ONE shirts and were approached by people who knew of ONE and only had positive things to say about our work.

Since the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run is held annually in Washington, DC, we will certainly turn out to run again next year. Anyone want to join us?

This week was supposed to be all about vaccines. But campaign work is often unpredictable, and unexpected news means you’ve gotta change course in an instant.

The House recently made BIG cuts to a bunch of programs that we fight for each and every day (we’re talking 40% cuts for some key programs that fight AIDS, malaria and hunger). Now the Senate has to vote on those budget cuts—and we’ve got to let them know that they can’t cut this life-saving funding.

For Challenge #3, which will run from February 28th to March 11th, we want our Campus Chapters to get even more signatures on our petition and then deliver them in-person to the nearest district offices of your Senators. Your work this week will make a huge impact—here’s some info to get started. This challenge is so important to us, we’re upping the stakes as well. We’re giving out 10 points per petition signature, and you’ll get 200 points just for participating in the challenge – on top of all the other great points for actions you’d normally get.

And ready to find out who won challenge number two? A big congratulations to University of Florida, our winner for this latest leg of OCC. They’ll get 500 well-deserved points for launching a very creative “Every Shot Counts” campaign, with University of Michigan Ann Arbor clinching 250 points with their second place win. 100 points also go to Louisiana State University, Webster University and the University of West Georgia, who tied for third. Click the links to see some of their incredible work!

We know this is short notice for a big change—but we know you can pull it off. ONE is counting on our college voices to deliver this message to the Senate! Get started!

ONE Campus is back and better than ever! An effort that has traditionally rallied students around the ONE Campus Challenge, this year’s ONE Campus program will focus on integrating our campus outreach into ONE’s national advocacy and campaign goals. This means more collaboration across universities and more opportunities for students to acquire the hands-on advocacy experience that they crave!

The program kicked off a few weeks ago with a live video-conference and call to action with Barbara Bush. With less than a month under our belts, we already have 100 student leaders across the country bringing the fight against poverty onto their campuses. This month, students are rallying around a number of advocacy actions, including ONE Vote 2010 platform drop-offs, “Lazarus Effect” screenings and an educational flier campaign around Halloween. The contest component of the effort will launch in early 2011.

Are you interested in leading the fight against poverty on your campus? Go to http://www.one.org/campus/ and become a campus leader or join an existing chapter. At this very moment, there are students on your college campus hungry to make a big difference for the world’s poorest people. We need your help to channel that energy and ensure legislative and policy victories for improved government, greater economic development and smarter aid in the developing world.

Join the fight to make poverty history today!
