It’s been a little over a week now since ONE and Chegg dropped the big news that we’re taking a group of students with us to Africa this summer -– and well, it looks like we’ve caused quite the stir. A flurry of tweets, retweets, Facebook updates and hopefully the occasional offline interaction have set the Internet ablaze as students across the country prepare their applications in excited anticipation.

MTV featured the internship this week and we even had the pleasure of a tweet from Ashton Kutcher and none other than MC Hammer. Check out what everyone has been saying and join the conversation yourself. With applications due on February 10, you’ve got yourself a few more weeks to tell us why you’re the ONE!

Here’s what some people have been saying about the program on social media:

Are you ready to kick-off part two of the ONE Campus Challenge? We’re back and bigger than ever -– and your first challenge (and chance to win a spot on this year’s grand prize trip to the Bonnaroo Music Festival) starts now!

Click here to get started on your first task of the year.

February is always a bit crazy here in DC. The President announces his budget for the next fiscal year, and it’s our first real glimpse of just how much funding our poverty-fighting programs might receive. So for the next few weeks, we need you to grab your cameras, hit the streets, and say cheese.

SEE ALSO: Introducing the 2011-2012 ONE Campus Challenge!

We’re asking our campuses to take one big action: Hold up a message letting President Obama know that these programs that make up less than 1 percent of the total US budget matter to you. Then submit your photo to earn points for your university, your alma mater or even the campus in your community. Whether you’re a current student, professor, alumni or family, get started here.

Calling all students! You may want to listen closely here, because we’re about to announce something pretty big. Major, in fact. Cue Jesse Eisenberg, actor, activist and all-around cool kid:

You heard it here first, folks. ONE is joining forces with Chegg, a leading social education platform for students, in a nationwide search to send eight all-star student advocates on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Africa. This unique internship program and trip will be an opportunity to become fully immersed in the issues faced by millions living on less than $1.25 a day in sub-Saharan Africa. You will get to experience the fight against extreme poverty and disease from the frontlines -– and come back fully energized to lead your peers as the next generation of advocates on campuses across the country.

Here’s how it works: let us know in 500 words or less why you should be one of eight lucky interns to experience the fight against extreme poverty in action with us and Chegg’s new social change arm, Chegg for Good, in Africa this summer. We want to know why you’re passionate about these issues and what you’re doing on campus right now to fight poverty -– whether in Africa or right here in your own community.

The top 50 applicants will be thrown into a public voting round, where you will have the chance to rally your friends, family and social networks to vote for you.

And from there, we’ll pick 20 finalists to come to Washington, D.C., in April, where you will spend a few days meeting with your members of Congress and proving to us you’ve got that special something to become one of eight headed on a jet plane to Africa this summer.

Think you got what it takes? Head over to Chegg for Good for more information and to submit your application.

APPLY HERE NOW

Ask yourself one question: Are you the ONE?

Each day this week, we’ll highlight a major accomplishment in the fight against poverty that ONE members helped achieve in 2011. Today, ONE’s OCC coordinator Mike Fazzino discusses our ONE Campus Challenge.

For our fifth year of the ONE Campus Challenge, students around the nation didn’t disappoint. More than 700 colleges participated in the challenge, and its ONE members put their powerful voices to work. Through creative challenges, college students, professors, alumni and friends joined together and urged political leaders to support smart and effective programs that save lives. So what did we accomplish?

Over the course of four exciting challenges, we logged more than 1,000 phone calls, nearly 2,000 letters, and more than 1,300 photo petitions. We engaged members of Congress 47 times, spoke with every major Republican candidate for president, recruited thousands of new ONE supporters, and doubled our social media following. And that’s just the beginning.

We couldn’t have done it without our 112 campus leaders and the thousands of ONE Campus supporters in colleges and universities in every state. While the University of Florida won the grand prize to travel with ONE to the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee, we’re not stopping there. Starting in January, we’ll relaunch the campus challenge with an all-new chance to win a spot on the same trip. Get started on our website. We’re looking forward to the holiday break, but believe that we’ll be back on campus in January to hit the ground running.

But that’s not all. December 2nd marked the end of the first stage of the ONE Campus Challenge, which means it’s time to announce our grand prize winners! Congratulations to the University of Florida!

For winning first place, we’ll bring 4 of their top students with us to the Bonnaroo Music Festival in June to help recruit thousands of new ONE members & enjoy some great music, too.

Brigham Young University Hawaii came in second place and will get to bring along three students, while University of Michigan: Ann Arbor’s third place finish will allow them to bring two students.

Want a chance to join them? Get a head start for next semester by thanking President Obama for his World AIDS Day commitment by picking up the phone and thanking him for his own World AIDS commitment. Get started here!

Jessica Sardella, president of ONE’s George Washington University chapter, reflects on her experience at ONE and (RED)’s World AIDS Day event last week. This piece was originally published on the ONE Campus Tumblr.

On World AIDS Day, the executive board of ONE at George Washington University was provided with the extraordinary opportunity to attend ONE and (RED)’s Beginning of the End of AIDS event featuring President Obama, Alicia Keys, Bono and other bipartisan leaders, which occurred on our university campus. The event was incredibly inspiring and the knowledgeable panelists effectively demonstrated the gravity of the situation and expressed the need for all of us to work together to reach a future without AIDS.

World AIDS Day is about reflecting on the progress we’ve recently made in eradicating the spread of HIV and AIDS while acknowledging that even though complete elimination is medically feasible, the fight is far from over. Pledging to completely eliminate the disease in newborns by 2015 and increasing medical treatment in African countries are clear goals that can be attained with the help of the government, private business, nonprofits and ordinary citizens.

I feel the speakers effectively communicated the importance of leading in the fight against AIDS and I agree it is our moral obligation, as the wealthiest and most capable nation in the world must take an active role in allocating resources to save lives that would otherwise be taken by AIDS.

I cannot express enough how blessed I feel to have been able to witness history, to be able to say I was there when President Obama announced the newest goal to provide an additional 2 million people with antiretroviral treatment by 2013. I know that we can reach this goal worldwide and that every one of us can make a difference.

As president of the George Washington University ONE chapter, I too, vow to spread awareness and support this cause. I feel that students can make a vast difference and that gaining the support of students is the perfect way to guarantee an ongoing fight in the future.

-Jessica Sardella, ONE GWU President

<img src="http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6226/6378809669_607b83de22.jpg" width="240" id="left"" alt="OCC FB photo edit - BYUH petition challenge">

On December 1, World AIDS Day, we’ll be marking a critical point in our fight against HIV/AIDS. Currently, 6.6 million people are receiving treatment (up from just 100,000 in 2002), but we’re a long way from declaring victory. So this year, let’s be a part of the solution. It’s time to spread the word about all the progress we’ve made in the fight against HIV/AIDS — and show how much more needs to get done, too.

What can you do to get involved in Challenge No. 4? Host a World AIDS Day event on your campus or in your community. Plan a movie night with friends. Turn a landmark on campus (RED), or write to your members of Congress and ask them to continue to fund the fight. And stay tuned, because we’ll reveal a big World AIDS Day project of our own next week…

And wondering who won Challenge No. 3? It was close (you guys submitted more than 500 photo petitions!), but Brigham Young University in Hawaii took the lead by hosting a petition photo-shoot and hunger banquet on campus — resulting in hundreds of handwritten letters, petitions and photographs that were delivered to their senators’ offices! Clark University took a solid second place while getting more than 10 percent of their campus to participate in their photo-petition -– and even met with Rep. McGovern to discuss effective poverty fighting programs. Newcomer Illinois State University pulled off an upset for third, with more than 200 photo petitions!

Don’t forget: the first half of the ONE Campus Challenge ends December 2nd –- and our top three campuses will secure spots to Bonnaroo. Get to work before the clock runs out in 11 days!

Up for another challenge? The third leg of the ONE Campus Challenge is here, and we’re asking our students to take it to the streets. Programs that fight HIV/AIDS, malaria and chronic hunger could be drastically cut by the Senate this month. Between now and November 18th, meet with your members of Congress and tell them to protect international development programs in US FY2012 Budget. Let your member know that these programs work and are saving lives. Head to the ONE Campus website to get started.

The University of Mississippi won second place with this video

We know you’re anxious to find out who won our second challenge. For the past three weeks, students across the country have been living below the poverty line -– on $1.50 per day -– to draw attention to the famine in the Horn of Africa. This was not an easy challenge, but we were blown away with the results. We received dozens of photos, blog posts, diaries and video clips chronicling the struggle that more than 1.4 billion people around the world endure each day. Even more impressive: students logged more than 500 phone calls and more than 1,000 letters to their members of Congress urging them to support smart programs that are saving lives.

So who won? The University of Florida really locked things up with an impressively poignant Tumblr blog post and calls and letters to their members of Congress. The University of Mississippi came in a close second with their great video, and tying for third was the University of Texas at El Paso and University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. We had more than 20 different campuses competing, so head to our Tumblr to check out more of our favorite submissions -– and remember, with a month left of the first phase of our challenge, it’s still anyone’s game.

This week, ONE Campus is challenging students to eat on less than $1.50 a day. To read more updates like these, head to ONE Campus’ Tumblr.

Presently, serious cuts to the funding of foreign aid programs within the 150 account, the International Affairs portion of the Federal Budget that encompasses foreign aid, have been proposed by Congress for the 2012 fiscal year. In response, ONE members across the country –- from Nebraska to New Jersey — are getting motivated and participating in the ONE Campus Challenge’s second challenge to stop these devastating cuts to foreign aid.

One University of Florida student answers the question: how does living on less than $1.50 a day relate to the 150 account?

By living under the conditions of extreme poverty, ONE members at the University of Florida are, for a short time, experiencing first-hand the conditions that 1.4 billion around the world face every day, driving the point home that the programs affected by proposed cuts make a tremendous difference in the lives of vulnerable populations in the developing world. Programs like Feed the Future aim to increase food security to prevent future famines like the current crisis in the Horn of Africa.

Every time I get hungry or I get a whiff of Chipotle (which seems to be wafting toward campus more than ever), or I forget that I’m participating in the challenge and reach for a piece of the Halloween candy that is all over my house, or I get tired of eating ramen noodles, I remember the 1.4 billion people who will not get to feast on Thursday when the challenge ends. That’s my motivation for writing letters and making phone calls to our elected officials in support of the 150 account.

University of Florida students and alumni in Gainesville, Washington DC and even India are participating in ONE-UF’s challenge to live off of $1.50 per day for five days. Follow us on Tumblr, and let us know what you think of our progress. Are you taking the challenge as well? It would be great to hear how it has impacted you, too. ?

-UF Alumni Lee Zeiche, Washington, D.C.
