By Lauren Conn

St. John Neumann’s Catholic Church in Reston, VA took a stand against poverty this past Sunday – in two different languages!

Hundreds of parishioners read the Stand Up Pledge after the morning Mass in English and then en español after the Spanish Mass in the afternoon. This bilingual action reflects the diversity of people coming together as one in the fight against poverty in this country and around the world. Erin Tunney and Damian Gullo coordinated the events at St. John Neumann’s to stand with millions of people worldwide who are committed to realizing the Millennium Development Goals.

Miami Stands Up

Stand Up 030

Yesterday I joined Miami ONE Members, University of Miami students and local community members to take a stand against poverty. This year ONE Miami joined with igKnite, a student group from UM to host an awareness event about the challenges of extreme poverty and the importance of achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

Stand Up 020

Throughout the night we heard from several speakers and many different artists, each with a unique message about hope and the importance of effective anti-poverty programs. It was an amazing event and all who attended seemed inspired and ready to take an action – whether it be attending a meeting with a member of Congress or simply spreading the word to friends and colleagues about the importance of this fight to make a better, safer world for all.

Stand Up and Take Action is fast approaching. On October 16th, 17th, and 18th, millions of people around the world will Stand Up and Take Action for the fourth year in a row to show their support for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the fight against poverty. This global event is coordinated by the UN Millennium Campaign and GCAP, and you better believe that ONE is going to be a part of it again this year.

From coast to coast, ONE members are Standing Up. Take Atlanta, Georgia for example. In collaboration with CARE, ONE members are hosting an exciting evening in Atlanta on Saturday, October 17. The event will be hosted by CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield and two of the world’s most prominent global health experts – Dr. Thomas Frieden, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and Dr. Helene Gayle, CEO of CARE. This informative and entertaining night will feature live music, food, a microfinance marketplace, and more. Plus, attendees will have the opportunity to help those in developing countries by urging support from elected officials. Learn more and RSVP here.

ONE Stand Up and Take Action events are also happening in the following locations across the US. Click on a city near you to RSVP and be a part of it all!

For a complete list of Stand Up events happening throughout the country, go to the Stand Up website and click on events in your region. Want to organize your own event? Just register on the website and describe your event — large or small.

Stand Up is a once-a-year opportunity to join with millions of others speaking out against hunger and poverty. Are you ready to stand?

Stand Up Miami!

Oct 6th, 2009 4:46 PM UTC
By Sara Paterni

This year ONE Miami is partnering with IgKnite, a student group at the University of Miami, to host a Stand Up and Take Action event to help raise awareness about extreme poverty around the world and call attention to the millions of people who die from preventable and treatable diseases like HIV/AIDS and malaria. The event will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the University of Miami’s School of Communications Courtyard.

The Miami event will be one of thousands across the world that are occurring over the Oct. 16 weekend as part of a globally coordinated effort by the United Nations Millennium Campaign to raise awareness about poverty and remind world leaders about the importance of achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). With billions of people living on just dollars a day around the world, global poverty remains one of the greatest challenges and tragedies the international community faces.

Wherever you are next week, I hope you will join us as we Stand together against global poverty!

Stand Up & Take Action October 16-18

On October 16, 17 and 18th, millions of people around the world will “Stand Up” against hunger and poverty in city plazas, schools, concert halls and churches. Stand Up & Take Action, coordinated by the UN Millennium Campaign and GCAP, is a global event in which citizens urge their leaders to keep their promises to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and work locally to ensure food security and climate justice. We are hearing from organizers around the world about the many Stand Up events planned – concerts, silent vigils, tree plantings, campus rallies — even a pumpkin drop. To join an event, go to the Stand Up website and click on events in your region.

If you would like to organize a Stand Up event, just register on the website and describe your event — large or small. You can download Stand Up signs, brochures, logos, banners, t-shirt designs and more. Remember to report back on the number of people who participated, so they can be counted for the Guinness World Records. (Last year, 116 million people participated in Stand Up — shattering the record for the greatest number of people taking action for a social cause in a set time.) Stand Up participants are invited to take photos and upload them to the website, which will run a continuous stream of Stand Up pics and videos throughout the 3-day event. If you can’t join a “Stand Up” event on the ground, you can participate virtually by going to the website and clicking on “Act Online.”

Why focus on the Millennium Development Goals? In 2000, 189 countries, including the U.S., committed to achieving eight goals that would address poverty, health, education and environmental challenges by 2015. However, more than halfway to the deadline, major reductions in global poverty levels have begun to slow or even reverse. The UN’s 2009 Millennium Development Goals Report is both promising and disturbing. But we can turn the tide.

Stand Up is a once-a-year opportunity to join with millions of others speaking out against hunger and poverty. For inspiration, check out scenes from last year’s Stand Up mobilization. Join us!
