Meet Makemende. He’s a fictional superhero character from Kenya afropop group Just A Band’s viral music video, “Ha-he.” In the video, the first to become “viral” in Kenya, he sends robbers fleeing, fights off masked kidnappers and rescues his heroine — all with a sense of cool and style that leaves audiences envious. The character Makemende has become an international icon since the video launched, earning him a huge national following and acclaim from the likes of MTV, Fast Company and CNN International. You could almost say he’s Kenya’s version of the “Old Spice man!”

Just A Band met while studying at Kenyatta University in Nairobi. They are an eclectic trio of filmmakers, animators and musicians. They formed in 2003 with a debut full-length album release, “Scratch to Reveal,” in 2008, Daniel, “Blinky Bill” and Jim garnered only moderate buzz prior to “Ha-he’s” overwhelming success, which, along with praise for the experimental jazz, rock and electro styles of their second album, “82” has gained them a fast-growing international fan base and a range of additional media attention.

Aiming to replace “the usual depressing symbols” of their home country, it seems that Just A Band are destined for success in promoting a positive, uplifting tone with which fellow Kenyans will have no trouble identifying.

And now, following in the footsteps of the superhero they created, the group is shattering long-standing stereotypes both about how an African pop group should sound and about what they have the power to influence.

Harnessing not only the power of music but also visual art, comics and animated video, Just A Band is re-inventing what it means to be a creative force for good. Already booked for Texas’ SXSW festival in 2012, a US tour in the works and hopes for an African one soon after, they seem to be well on their way.

Check out this playlist on Spotify to hear more from Just A Band, their influencers and some other awesome Kenyan music. And take a look at the Makemende video above. As the number one YouTube video in Kenya to date, they’ve got to be onto something good, right?

Get ready to take part in one of the largest World AIDS Day online events ever. Next Thursday, December 1st, ONE, (RED) and an impressive list of partners and influencers are hosting a live broadcast event with an amazing group of people –- and we want you at the table, too.

The event, “The Beginning of the End of AIDS,” is a live discussion powered by YouTube, featuring former Presidents George W. Bush and President Bill Clinton, Bono, Alicia Keys and more. The panel -– with help from partners at the Tema Clinic in Ghana, Keep a Child Alive, the Bush Foundation, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, the Saddleback Church and others — will tackle key questions on the fight against AIDS, including where we are today, where we’re falling short, and what it’s going to take to end this preventable disease for good.

This is where you come in: we need your questions for the panel. Take a minute to watch this video from ONE CEO Michael Elliott above and visit www.youtube.com/TheONECampaign to submit your question on our YouTube channel now. Once you’re done, spread the word and ask your friends and family to vote on your question so we can present it to our distinguished panel.

AIDS used to be a death sentence. Now, remarkably, we could be looking at the beginning of the end of AIDS if certain steps are taken. So, be sure to ask your question now and mark your calendar for Thursday, December 1st from 10 to 12 p.m. ET to join our online YouTube event.

When I received this third and final video blog from ONE member Katie Meyler, I immediately hit play to watch Katie tell Abigail’s story. Katie tells it best, but it struck me how Abigail’s story is really about how poverty robs a girl of more than an education -– it robs her of her childhood. Abigail is now in school and at the top of her class because of More Than Me.
Check out the amazing video by the What Took You So Long foundation:

Moved by Abigail’s story? Vote for More Than Me in the Chase Community Giving contest –- voting ends tomorrow and Katie really needs our support to put 100 more girls like Abigail in school for seven years. For these girls, an education is the key to a real childhood and a better life.

Katie has been busy this weekend –- organizing a flash mob and riding the NYC subway in her school uniform, handing out voting cards drumming up support for More Than Me. She’s was featured in the Huffington Post, and tonight, if you’re in the NYC area, you can catch her at 7 p.m. on NBC in a live interview with Chuck Scarborough.

One of the most basic amenities that we take for granted here in the US today, it is difficult to even imagine what life would be like without the toilet. But for much of the developing world, there is no need to imagine, as life without adequate sanitation is both a common and dangerous reality. Often the hidden problems behind high child mortality rates, poor water quality and lack of safe waste disposal are known to cause a host of horrible, life-threatening diseases, including rotavirus, cholera, typhoid and hepatitis.

On the 10th anniversary of World Toilet Day, which takes place on November 19, we all have a chance to help make lack of clean water and adequate sanitation a thing of the past. To help you learn all about sanitation, here are three recommended videos:

Vanguard, a documentary series on Current TV, came out with this awesome 44-minute documentary on sanitation called “The World’s Toilet Crisis.” It’s raw, candid and highly persuasive in the argument that yes — everyone in the world should have a toilet! Watch it here:

All week, Matt Damon, co-founder of Water.org, he has been asking people all over the world to donate their Facebook and Twitter updates to “talk sh*t” in the hope that he can provoke a movement toward improved standards of sanitation for people in developing countries.

He shares some of the absurd statistics on the water and sanitation crisis and what you can do to help in his PSA here:

And Damon is not the only famous face looking to drive a fight for safe, hygienic toilet access this year. In July, the Gates Foundation announced their “Reinventing the Toilet Challenge,” an initiative designed to engineer innovative new solutions to sanitation problems that includes funding for research to develop a toilet that can turn waste into energy and clean water.

With a staggering 2.6 billion people lacking access to improved sanitation, showing our support for these and other initiatives planned for World Toilet Day seems the least we can do to help. Looking for some other ways to promote the cause? Check out the World Toilet Day website. And take a moment to read through their toolkit. From an official song, to sending a letter to your local officials and a list of activities you can take part in, there really are opportunities for everyone to get involved.

Katie Meyler’s childhood wasn’t easy. She was poor growing up in Phillipsburg, New Jersey. She didn’t have the money to fit in and escape her sometimes traumatic home life. Then, she went to Central America and experienced real poverty. She met “kids with big smiles with no shoes” and was inspired to do something about it. When she was nervous about starting her own organization, More Than Me, her friends encouraged her to “get over herself” — because it isn’t about her, it’s about them. Watch Katie’s amazing story in her exclusive video for ONE:

It’s about Elizabeth, who was able to go to pre-K, kindergarten and now first grade because of Katie. Elizabeth now wants to be a doctor. In post-conflict Liberia, where the official employment rate is 15 percent, most people subsist by selling things. Some people get by on selling fruit or firewood from a cart or under a big umbrella, but even that requires some investment. For girls in Monrovia’s West Point slum, when you have nothing, you sell yourself. More Than Me helps girls, some of whom were child prostitutes, paying their school fees and providing day care, meals and health care.

For the next week, thousands of charities will compete for a share of $3 million in the Chase Community Giving contest. The Facebook-based voting contest will award one grand prize of $250,000 –- money that would allow More Than Me to put 100 girls in school for seven years. The four charities that come in second to fifth place get $100,000, and the rest through the top 25 get $25,000. This contest is a huge opportunity for Katie, who has been effectively homeless for two years, relying on a network of friends for a couch to sleep on when she’s stateside. More Than Me has been holding solid at #11 but there is some stiff competition out there and votes are flooding in — so vote for More Than Me, then share Katie’s amazing story with your Facebook friends!

To vote, first “Like” Chase Community Giving, then vote for More Than Me!

Can’t get enough of Katie? Send her a tweet at @KatieMeyler and watch her last video for ONE here.

In the small West African country of Liberia, one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world, there’s a slum called West Point. That’s where a girl from New Jersey -– Katie Meyler -– met Elizabeth, and founded an organization called More Than Me. Katie moved to Liberia after 14 years of civil war destroyed much of Liberia’s economy, and killed approximately 250,000 people. Many of the orphaned children Katie met had few options, and none of them was a quality education. Since then, More Than Me has grown to support scholarships for more than 100 children in Liberia.

Katie, a photographer, activist and ONE supporter, exemplifies everything that we love about our ONE members: she’s passionate, emotional, creative and persuasive — and a great advocate in the fight against poverty. So, over the next couple of weeks, Katie will be sharing a few of her inspiring stories through an exclusive series of video blog posts. In this first video, which she shares the story of Elizabeth. We hope you watch, are inspired, vote for More Than Me in the Chase Community Giving contest and come back eager for her next story.

So many of us in DC are beginning to get a little too used to the grinding partisanship and divides that we often miss good news when it comes through. Yesterday morning, Rev. Jim Wallis of Sojourners and member of President Obama’s White House faith advisory committee, and Dr. Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention and former supporter of President George W. Bush, sat down on on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program to talk about the moral issues facing the 2012 election. Joe Scarborough opens up with a joke, expecting Rev. Wallis and Dr. Land to come into the studio wearing boxing gloves, since they disagree about a lot. But when it comes to fighting global poverty, both Wallis and Land agree: We must maintain our commitments to the world’s poorest people.

On the first clip, Rev. Wallis and Dr. Land talk about how they agree on maintaining America’s commitment to beat back extreme poverty and voice their support for treatable, preventable disease. Then in much of the second clip, both Rev. Wallis and Dr. Land get specific about protecting malaria funding, AIDS funding like PEPFAR, as well as the Millennium Challenge. Joe even gets in on the conversation and connects all these things to the Bible. It’s good stuff and worth a look.
