Last night, if you happened to be watching Billboard.com’s live stream of the Daughtry concert, you might’ve seen one of the band members sporting a very familiar shirt.
Check it out:
ONE got a second visual shout out this week!
Singer/song writer extraordinaire Sara Groves released the second video for her new disc “Fireflies and Songs.” In the video for the song “Twice as Good” Troy Groves appears throughout wearing his ONE Edun shirt.
Sara has long had a heart for Africa, traveling to Rwanda in 2005 and 2009. She sponsored a child from Gisanga, Rwanda through Food for the Hungry. She actively supports the human rights agency International Justice Mission. Both Food for the Hungry and IJM are ONE Partners.
The video for “Twice as Good” comes out of her time in Rwanda as well. Sara relates about the song:
In Rwanda they say, “You better have four good friends,” because the ambulance in Rwanda is a cot carried by four men. So if you get hurt, you better have four friends that are willing to forego a day’s wages and usually help pitch in on your medical costs. I brought back statuettes, which represent that from Rwanda for each of my ‘go-to’ girlfriends. We each have one in our home. Often, one of us will say, “It’s my turn in the cot.” Christa Wells, an amazing singer/songwriter from NC, came up with the line ‘half as hard and twice as good’ and I kind of built the song around that.
Check out the video:
Many thanks to Sara, Troy and the entire band!
P.S. If you want to see and hear more, check out this video for the Sara’s song “I Saw What I Saw” inspired by her time in Rwanda.
On Thursday evening ONE volunteers Brian Thomas and Sarah Wonders had the opportunity to get involved with the 3 Rivers Film Festival in Pittsburgh at the premier of Youssou N’dour: I Bring What I Love. This music documentary, directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, opens with Senegalese activist and musician Youssou N’dour singing his anthem to Africa, Wake Up, in which he calls on the continent to unify itself. We follow him on tour at home and abroad, witnessing the power and charisma behind the music – with highlights by N’Dour, Peter Gabriel, Bono, Moustapha Mbaye, Kabou Guèye and Fathi Salama.
At the height of his career, N’dour composed Egypt, a deeply spiritual album dedicated to a more tolerant view of his Islam faith. It was embraced by Western audiences (and won a Grammy) but ignited serious religious controversy in his homeland. This inspiring film continues the call for tolerance.

Last night, longtime ONE members and supporters, Switchfoot appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live playing a cut (Mess With Me) off their new disc Hello Hurricane. It’s a great tune and a really great disc. So it’s worth watching just for the performance.
But it’s really worth watching for the added bonus of seeing lead singer Jon Foreman sporting a ONE shirt during the performance. It’s a great visual shout out.
Check out the video:
Thanks to Jon and all of Switchfoot!

For those who might not have had a chance to peruse the (RED)TM site lately, I wanted to highlight the fantastic and truly interactive (RED)NIGHTS section. In case you’re not familiar, (RED)NIGHTS is ‘a concert series that saves lives’ featuring 26 concerts by different musicians including Santigold, Fall Out Boy, Built to Spill and many others in support of (RED)’s goal to eliminate AIDS in Africa. We blogged about “Hal Willner Presents: Evening with Gavin Friday and Friends”, which was the 16th concert in the series, here.
The web portion of the series relies heavily on users to share photos, videos, and tweets—a lot of which are then posted on the site. All told it is a very cool site, so be sure to check it out and share with your friends here.
As you know, a portion of profits from each (RED) product sold goes directly to the Global Fund to invest in African AIDS programs. To date, (RED) has generated over $135,000,000, which supports AIDS programs that have reached 4 million people.
You’re not going to want to miss “An Evening with Gavin Friday,” a star-studded concert our friends at (RED) are hosting this Sunday, October 4 at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
The concert features Laurie Anderson, Antony, Elizabeth Ashley, Bono, Adam Clayton, Andrea Corr, The Edge, Flo & Eddie, Joel Grey, Bill Frisell, Guggi, Scarlett Johansson, Shane MacGowan, Eric Mingus, Larry Mullen Jr., JG Thirlwell, Martha Wainwright, Rufus Wainwright, Chloe Webb, plus other special guests.
You can buy tickets to the show here.
Hal Willner presents an “Evening with Gavin Friday and Friends” which is part of the (RED)NIGHTS concert series. Each show contributes a portion of the proceeds directly to help eliminate AIDS in Africa. You can learn more about the (RED)NIGHTS series here.
Hope to see you at the show Sunday.

Tonight the U2 360 Tour> comes to town, and DC ONE Staff will be there to help sign up new members, spread the good word about ONE, and enjoy the music.
All over Europe and North America, ONE members have been turning out in droves at these concerts to recruit new ONE members eager to join in the fight against extreme poverty and global disease. Tonight we’ll get a chance to see it in action.
We’ll be updating the ONE Blog with photos and reactions, and Tweeting throughout the night in real time. So keep your eyes peeled!
After three months on the road with the U2 360 tour, I’m now passing the torch (well, walkie-talkie since we didn’t have a torch) to Matt Higginson.
I’ve had a fantastic time, meeting ONE members around Europe and North America and working with our volunteers to sign up tens of thousands of new folks. But, now Matt is back from leave so I have a chance to head home to London and get back to mobilising our global membership to take action on some key upcoming moments.
Thank you to everyone who helped along the way, especially the hundreds of energetic and passionate volunteers who really did all the hard work of signing up new members. I hope to see you all again soon and that you’ll join me in wishing Matt good luck with the rest of the tour.

ONE is turning to its community of artists, friends, members and staff for their top picks on creative works that have enhanced their knowledge and understanding of the richness of African culture and arts. Today we have a recommendation from Vusi Mahlasela:
I’m currently en route to Paris right now to meet up with some of my favorite African musicians: Angelique Kidjo, Rokia Traore, Habib Koite and more. Together, we’re hosting a big concert to celebrate and honor the
music and the life of the late great South African singer Miriam Makeba or “Mama Africa” as she’s often called.
Her songs and voice have been etched in mind and in my soul since I was a little boy. She has been an inspiration to us all, both as a musician and as a social activist. Thank you, Mama Africa.
