ONE Members with Senator Sherrod Brown

Last week, ONE members woke up at the crack of dawn to attend President Obama’s speech to a large crowd in Parma, Ohio at Cuyahoga Community College. The 5 AM wake-up call was well worth the second row seats right in front of the president!

Pres. Obama had a clear view of our ONE T-shirts, as did the surrounding audience. One audience member from Australia approached us to thank ONE for our efforts to raise awareness around the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease.

Though we didn’t give the president a ONE band, we did have a minute with Democratic Senate candidate and Lt. Governor Lee Fisher and Rep. Dennis Kucinich, (D-Ohio). We also thanked Sen. Sherrod Brown, (D-Ohio), for his advocacy on behalf of the world’s poorest and for supporting efforts to preserve the international affairs budget, which funds ONE’s priorities.

Ohio already has more than 45,000 ONE members — and ONE Vote hopes to sign up more out on the campaign trail! If you’re from Ohio, join us on Facebook and Twitter.

Last weekend, Iowa state Rep. Chris Hagenow met briefly with Minority Leader Rep. John Boehner, (R-Ohio) to talk about our efforts to fight AIDS and poverty in Africa — and even presented him with a ONE band.

State Rep. Hagenow told Leader Boehner that people of good faith know that our country remains morally strong, partly because of the heroic efforts in Africa started by the Bush administration.

He went on to say that Catholic Relief Services has received funds from the Global Fund to help save lives in Africa.

State Rep. Hagenow left Leader Boehner with one last comment: “I hope that under your leadership, our country will continue to support life saving programs like the Global Fund.”

More members…look at all those ONE shirts!

This past Saturday morning, seven ONE volunteers and I participated in the Northwest Ohio AIDS walk. The walk brought together more than 200 people and raised more than $20,000 for local HIV/AIDS programs.

Raja Aossey, a ONE member and art therapy student at Lourdes College, brought along three of her friends from Tanzania. Raja’s friends are visiting Ohio thanks to the U.S. State Department grant program, Arts Exchanges on International Issues, which promotes the exchange of ideas and development of business skills for young female artists.

They were eager to get involved with ONE and excited to hear about ONE’s efforts to help the 1.4 billion people living in extreme poverty –- particularly through economic growth and increased trade opportunities.

Another ONE volunteer, Pat Lee, came out to support ONE’s proven, cost-effective solutions to help combat preventable disease and to honor her son, who died a few years ago due to HIV/AIDS.

The event was one of our best yet in Ohio. We signed up 64 new members at the walk, and many participants donned ONE stickers and wristbands all morning.

Ohio Lazarus Effect Screening

Last night, nearly 30 ONE members of all ages got together in Columbus, Ohio to view “The Lazarus Effect” and learn more about ONE Vote 2010.

ONE members really enjoyed the stories of people living with HIV/AIDS from the documentary. They were astonished to see the ARV’s positive, fast-acting effects — and many people didn’t know that it only costs 40 cents a day to put someone on these lifesaving drugs.

Overall, it was a great event. Ohio ONE members are excited for ONE Vote 2010 and they’re ready to hit the trail with the candidates!

Election season is gearing up in Florida, and so are we. As senate candidates hit the campaign trail between now and November, ONE will be there to ask them what they plan to do about extreme poverty if they win. Right now, we’re focusing on 6 states in particular: Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, New Hampshire, and Ohio.

Between now and election day, ONE will be working hard to engage Senate candidates from all parties in a conversation about crucial issues like extreme poverty and global development. A non-partisan effort, ONE Vote 2010 is making sure candidates know that voters in their state want to hear their positions on poverty fighting solutions. We will be at campaign rallies, in the town halls, and eating cotton candy with the best of them at county fairs – if the candidates are there, so are ONE members.

I really hope you can join us. In 2008, we ran a similar effort to get all major presidential candidates “On the Record” and now the president, vice president, and secretary of state are on the record saying what they’d do to fight extreme poverty.

Saturday, April 18, was the tenth – annual Earth Gathering Festival at the Historic Pump House Center For The Arts in downtown Chillicothe, Ohio. The event was hosted by the Chillicothe Art League and organized by ONE member Shelly Pocock. The event features earth-friendly art, music, food, products and ideas. The weather was perfect throughout the day, and when all was said and done, Shelly concluded that it was the highest attended and best Earth Gathering Festival so far. ONE Chillicothe participated for the third consecutive year and we focused on Millennium Development Goal number seven: to Ensure environmental sustainability.

We created games and teaching materials from the ONE website on Climate and Development, Agriculture, and Water & Sanitation. We gathered 52 new sign-ups in our small town that has already been declared a “City of ONE” and is ONE saturated. ONE shirts and bands are visible everywhere. The festival got going with a musical line-up that included ONE member, Stacey “Hippie” Skaggs, a very popular and talented acoustic folk artist. Stacey, promoting the cause in her ONE shirt, entertained the crowd with a 10 song set and a pretty cool ONE “rock goddess” pose. From the organizers, to the entertainment, to the participants, ONE Chillicothe members are gathering to get the word out about earth friendliness, extreme poverty and Global disease during the week of Earth Day. For more on this event, visit www.earthgathering.com.

What’s Going On In Miami (Ohio)

The library at Miami University in Ohio was abuzz on Monday night, but not from studying. The buzz was a group of students meeting to discuss how to end global poverty. This past semester the student group has been incredibly active in making ONE’s presence known on Miami’s campus.

Led by students Megan Casey, Ashley Leonard and Amanda Beckham, ONE Miami has held several events on and off campus. This semester alone Miami students have held events at local bars and concert halls signing up new members. They also hosted the ONE Bus and collaborated with several other student organizations.

There is no doubt that other campuses can model Miami in starting an organization on their campus and quickly become active. Congratulations to all Miami ONE members on all the work you have done! Keep it up!
