On Tuesday evening, Tom Leary and I traveled to former US Senate candidate Ovide Lamontagne’s home in Manchester, New Hampshire for a house party with former US Senator, Rick Santorum. ONE members will remember Sen. Santorum’s last visit to NH in November to speak at a Rotary meeting in Manchester.

After the Q&A session, Tom thanked Sen. Santorum for his years in the Senate where he was a true hero to the world’s poorest and a champion of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Malaria and TB. Millions of people are alive around the world today due to the bipartisan efforts of leaders like Sen. Santorum.

Yesterday afternoon, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum came to Manchester, New Hampshire — a recently declared City of ONE — and met with the Manchester Rotary Club. ONE member Tom Leary made it out to the event and had a chance to catch up with Sen. Santorum about ONE and efforts to save millions of lives in the poorest nations on earth.

Tom thanked Sen. Santorum for serving on our ONE Vote 2010 advisory committee and told him how Sen. Elect Kelly Ayotte had recorded a video for our more than 10,000 New Hampshire ONE members. Tom went on to thank Sen. Santorum for his own work in the US Senate to help lead America’s response to the global HIV/AIDS crisis and save millions of lives around the world — a champion of the world’s poorest people!

A photo of Manchester, NH Mayor Ted Gatsas with Matthew Bartlett from this past summer.

Last night, at City Hall, Mayor Ted Gatsas proclaimed Manchester, NH a “ONE City” — a gesture that recognizes ONE and US efforts to fight extreme poverty and save lives in the poorest nations around the world.

Manchester is the largest city in New Hampshire, and by becoming a ONE City, joining the likes of Chicago and Los Angeles, the city recognizes the important role its citizens play in the global economy and community.

Addressing the aldermen and the public, Mayor Gatsas invited our group of ONE members to the front of the room to receive the proclamation. He read aloud the proclamation, which commends US efforts that help save lives in the poorest nations and generate good will toward America.

As soon as we got into the gym at Nashua Community College in New Hampshire, we got right up to the front row of the general seating section — dead center — so that former President Bill Clinton could see our ONE shirts. After a few quick speeches, Pres. Clinton came out and started his speech by talking about the phone call he had with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton the night before, and how she was visiting an AIDS orphanage in Cambodia that the Clinton Foundation had set up. He went on to talk about his own recent efforts in Haiti to help stop the deadly cholera outbreak.

Later on in his speech, he gave great credit to former President George W. Bush for starting PEPFAR, which he said was saving millions of lives around the world from HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. As ONE members, we were proud to hear him talk about America’s leading role in the fight against global disease and extreme poverty, and the bipartisan credit and support that he gave to PEPFAR.

Tom Leary and Sen. Whitehouse

On Friday, New Hampshire ONE member Tom Leary pulled a double shift for ONE and the world’s poorest people. In the morning, he went to Salem and spoke with former Governor Mitt Romney and thanked him for his past ideas and thoughts for the world’s poorest people.

Then, Friday night in Manchester, Tom attended a rally for US Senate candidate Rep. Paul Hodes , who was joined by former Virginia Governor Tim Kaine and Rhode Island Senator Sheldon Whitehouse.

Tom told me that as soon as Gov. Kaine saw him, he instantly pointed him out in his ONE shirt and let him know what a great job ONE has done to mobilize people all across America in urging continued leadership in the fight against AIDS and poverty in Africa.

Tom told me that after Sen. Whitehouse addressed the crowd, he left without getting a chance to talk with him. But that did not stop Tom on his double shift for ONE. He managed to catch up with Sen. Whitehouse in the parking lot and thanked him for his hard work around the international affairs budget earlier this year.

ONE members Angie, Brian, Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Matt

On Saturday in New Hampshire, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani returned to the Granite State to campaign for some local and statewide candidates. I caught up with Rudy in Londonderry with some ONE members who wanted to thank him for his efforts with ONE during the 2008 presidential primary.

During the 2008 campaign, Rudy would always make time to talk with ONE members and elaborate on his ideas about life-saving efforts in Africa and expanding trade and opportunity for the world’s poorest people.

It seems that in 2010, no matter where Rudy campaigns — in Chicago, Florida or anywhere else — he makes time for ONE members (sometimes crossing the street or even pulling ONE members out of the crowd). Saturday was no different!

Right after taping a quick TV interview, Rudy took time to speak with us about ONE. We thanked him for always remembering ONE and the world’s poorest people. He snapped a photo with us and told us that at an earlier stop, he ran into a ONE member who thanked him, too. Before he got in his car, he stopped and turned back and said, “You really are a great organization and you are doing amazing work. God bless you.”

As we hit the campaign trail to urge continued leadership in the fight against extreme poverty and global disease, it is always good to run into old friends and supporters of ONE!

Friday night was Trick or Treat night in Concord, N.H., and Main Street was closed off for kids (and adults) who were dressed up for the spooky holiday.

I made my way down the street with a few ONE members who were decked out in their own costumes: ONE shirts. We ran into US Senate candidate Kelly Ayotte and Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown who were talking with Granite State voters as they campaigned in Concord. Kelly Ayotte immediately recognized us and we thanked her for her time with ONE members all across New Hampshire. And Sen. Brown said that he too knew about ONE and mentioned seeing ONE and ONE members on Capitol Hill last month! I told him about our efforts to save lives in Africa, and told him how I met his daughter Ayla Brown when she performed a concert in Manchester, N.H., this past summer.

Both Kelly Ayotte and Sen. Brown took time to get a photo with us in our ONE shirts before making their way down the street.
