Last Sunday, Governor Mike Huckabee came to Des Moines, Iowa, to help raise money for a local church. During the event, Iowa State Central Committeeman Wes Enos, who recently spoke about ONE with Gov. Bobby Jindal, had the opportunity to catch up with longtime friend of ONE, Gov. Huckabee.

Mr. Enos thanked Gov. Huckabee for his support for the world’s poorest people, and presented him a copy of “The Lazarus Effect,” a documentary from our sister organization (RED), which details the live-saving efforts of the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, Malaria and TB.

Gov. Huckabee told Mr. Enos that he is always happy to talk with ONE members, and that he was encouraged to know that people from all walks of life are working together with ONE to help fight hunger and disease for the world’s poorest people.

Iowa State Central Committee member Wes Enos had the opportunity to talk with Governor Bobby Jindal about ONE during his stop at a Republican rally in Newton, Iowa yesterday, just like we did with him earlier this month in New Hampshire. Gov. Jindal was in town as part of a GOP effort around the gubernatorial race, but Mr. Enos used the opportunity to tell him about ONE and our efforts to fight extreme poverty and global disease in the poorest parts of Africa.

Mr. Enos thanked Gov. Jindal for his work with Secretary Tommy Thompson while Gov. Jindal was at the Department of Health and Human Services from 2001 to 2003. Mr. Enos told Gov. Jindal that his efforts — as part of the Bush Administration’s efforts to fight AIDS and poverty in Africa — are still being felt today. Gov. Jindal told him it was an honor to be part of an effort that is still saving lives today.

Yesterday, Gov. Haley Barbour was in Newton, Iowa for a rally for former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad. Just like we did in New Hampshire, ONE was there to talk with him about American efforts to save millions of lives in the developing world.

Gov. Branstad’s intern, Jordan Grant, got a chance to speak with Gov. Barbour and told him he is a ONE member. Jordan explained that ONE advocates for urgent action in the fight against AIDS and poverty in Africa. Governor Barbour thanked Jordan for his work with ONE, and said it’s young people like him and organizations like ONE that make the world a better place.

No matter where you go, or who you are, you never know when you will run into a ONE member who is there to celebrate and encourage great American leadership in the fight against extreme poverty and global disease!

Tom Cope presents Sen. Rick Santorum with a copy of “The Lazarus Effect.”

Former Senator Rick Santorum was in Clive, Iowa on Monday headlining a fundraiser for a local candidate. While he was there, Tom Cope, former assistant to the Iowa Senate Majority leader and GOP activist was able to talk with former Senator Santorum, who is also on our ONE Vote 2010 Advisory Board.

He gave him a copy of “The Lazarus Effect”, explaining to him that ONE’s sister organization, (RED), partnered with HBO to produce the documentary that shows how the Global Fund is working on the ground in the poorest parts of Africa to help save millions of lives from HIV/AIDS.

Back in 2006, while serving in the U.S. Senate, and with bipartisan support, Senator Santorum was instrumental in funding the Global Fund, making sure that America was helping the least among us in the world. Mr. Cope thanked him for his work for ONE and his continued support on behalf of the world’s poorest people.

Over the weekend, Polk County Republican Co-Chair and Army Veteran Will Rogers had an opportunity to speak with Sen. Grassley at a Republican fundraiser in Des Moines, Iowa.

Grassley Intercept with Band

Mr. Rogers gave Sen. Grassley a ONE band and thanked him for meeting personally with ONE members from Luther College during last year’s Power 100 summit in D.C. Mr. Rogers asked Sen. Grassley to encourage the President for a strong international affairs budget so our country can continue to save lives in Africa and create a safer world both here and abroad.

Senator Grassley said he had a great time meeting with the students, and told him that he enjoyed listening to Bono at the prayer breakfast back in February of 2006.

By using our voices with ONE, we can help make sure that our nation does all it can to fight hunger, disease and extreme poverty in Africa.

Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell was in Iowa this weekend as the keynote speakers at the annual Jefferson Jackson dinner in Des Moines. I wanted to talk to him about ONE and our Global Fund campaign, knowing he has probably seen the many awesome ONE members in Pennsylvania.

I wanted to tell him that as a mother, I believe all babies should be born happy and healthy. I wanted to ask him to go back to Pennsylvania and work with his US Congress members to make sure that the President’s recent $4 billion commitment to the Global Fund becomes a reality starting in the budget and appropriations process next year.

These are all the things I wanted to say, but when the governor was being whisked away after his speech I only had 2 seconds to say thank you for your support, shake his hand and give him a ONE band. When he realized what it was, he smiled held it up and gave me a nod.

Gov Rendell ONE Band

I know he didn’t get everything I was thinking just from handing him a ONE band but I am sure when he goes home and sees ONE members in Pennsylvania he will remember all the things he said in his speech about giving people opportunities and that he will remember the US’s efforts in the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease and all of the work that ONE members take in his home state.

Christi_AngeloOn October 4th, former Senator Jeff Angelo had a chance to speak with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie while he was in Iowa for a dinner with Republican Gubernatorial candidate Terry Branstad.

Sen. Angelo congratulated Governor Christie on his appointment to the bi-partisan Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations. And there was just enough time for Sen. Angelo to tell Gov. Christie about ONE, and how the Global Fund is one of the most powerful tools we have in the fight against AIDS, TB, and malaria in Africa.

Sen. Angelo slipped him a ONE band, and Gov. Christie said he looks forward to learning more about ONE.
