Yesterday, the Pembroke Pines Charter High School faculty and student body gathered outside to rally in support of ONE’s fight to ensure that no child is born with HIV by 2015. More than 200 students showed up with signs and flags to help get the message across, all while donning ONE shirts.
During the event, many of the students took some time to record their ONE wish for World AIDS Day. Check out what they had to say and be sure to tweet your ONE wish this week!
ONE is hitting the campaign trail to find out where candidates stand on extreme poverty. Stay tuned for more updates like these from our field team and organizers on the road.
During a stop on his bus tour of Florida last Saturday in West Miami, former Florida Statehouse Speaker and Republican U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio, was greeted by several hundred Floridians — and some ONE members who were there to remind him about the world’s poorest people. Despite the large crowd, we arrived extra early, and were able to stand in the front row as he gave his speech.
After the event concluded, we were able to quickly speak with Marco, and ONE Congressional District Leader, Alix Gordon, was able to hand him a ONE band. He immediately recognized our ONE shirts and we urged him to support America’s leadership in the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria if elected to the U.S. Senate. He told us we were “doing great work” and urged us to continue what we are doing.
Over the next three weeks leading up to the elections, Florida ONE members will be out in full force as we continue to engage candidates and voters about America’s efforts in the fight against extreme poverty in Africa. Florida ONE members have already had great interaction with all three candidates for the U.S. Senate, and look forward to continuing the hard work all the way to November 2nd and beyond.

This year ONE Miami is partnering with IgKnite, a student group at the University of Miami, to host a Stand Up and Take Action event to help raise awareness about extreme poverty around the world and call attention to the millions of people who die from preventable and treatable diseases like HIV/AIDS and malaria. The event will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the University of Miami’s School of Communications Courtyard.
The Miami event will be one of thousands across the world that are occurring over the Oct. 16 weekend as part of a globally coordinated effort by the United Nations Millennium Campaign to raise awareness about poverty and remind world leaders about the importance of achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). With billions of people living on just dollars a day around the world, global poverty remains one of the greatest challenges and tragedies the international community faces.
Wherever you are next week, I hope you will join us as we Stand together against global poverty!
Last week Betsy Skipp, Laurie Campbell, Sara Paterni and I went to the Miami office of Rep. Ros-Lehtinen to hand deliver more than 100 constituent letters which were written at the recent Florida ONE Membership Conference.
Each letter asked Rep. Ros-Lehtinen to support $51.85 billion for the Foreign Operations budget, which funds critical life-saving and development programs like PEPFAR and the Millennium Challenge Corporation.
While there we also thanked the office staff for Rep. Ros-Lehtinen’s recorded greeting, which was played at the Florida Membership Conference. Rep. Ros-Lehtinen’s message was inspiring and encouraged us all to continue our work on the ground to increase awareness about global poverty.
This Saturday, the first ever ONE Membership Conference will be held in Miami, Florida. The ONE conference will feature presentations from ONE staff, Gabe Lazier from The Alliance To End Hunger, and highlight Florida ONE Member activity and congressional engagement. We are also very excited that ONE’s CEO David Lane will be on hand to deliver opening remarks.
The conference aims to further educate and develop ONE’s grassroots support and expand congressional support for international life saving efforts. This will be a very exciting event, and we here at ONE view this as a direct investment in our most valuable resources…our ONE membership!
There will be plenty of information, prizes, and free ONE gear for those that recruit and bring new ONE members to the ONE conference. So please join us this Saturday from 1:00pm to 6:00pm in Miami, and please register here now to save a place.
Stay tuned to the ONE Blog for updates from the Florida ONE Membership Conference and local Florida ONE members.
And if you cannot join us, we hope you can join us at the next ONE Membership Conference. Location and details to be named soon!

Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, ranking member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, held a grand opening celebration at her new district office in Miami, Florida last Wednesday. I met up with fellow ONE member, Alix Gordon for the big event.
The office opening drew people many from the community, including representatives from ONE’s partners: Bread for the World, CARE and RESULTS. Shortly after arriving we were ushered over to greet the Congresswoman and take an official photo. She took one look at our ONE shirts and in front of a very crowded room gave us a warm welcome and thanked us for coming out to the event.
We are very thankful for the invitation to attend the event and look forward to continuing our relationship with Rep. Ros-Lehtinen and her staff.
ONE is campaigning to ensure that the Congressional budget does not cut foreign assistance programs like Feed the Future that help people break the cycle of poverty and hunger.
The Horn of Africa is experiencing its worst drought in 60 years. More than 11 million people, mostly nomadic pastoralists and farmers in south-central Somalia, north-eastern Kenya, and south-eastern Ethiopia, are severely lacking access to food.
2011 marks 30 years since the first cases of AIDS were documented. Take a closer look at the specific, achievable goals we must hit by 2015 to make this year the beginning of the end of AIDS.
As aid agencies warn more than 9 million people could be affected by a food crisis in East Africa, world leaders are failing to keep their 2009 promises to tackle the causes of chronic hunger and support farmers in the world's poorest countries.
