Rudy Giuliani gave a campaign stump speech in Keene, New Hampshire, on Wednesday. ONE members Kevin Schmitt and Melissa Skinner traveled there to make sure that the mayor heard from the ONE Campaign while he was in the Granite State.
When they finally got to Keene, they found out that the event was unfortunately closed to the public. But ONE members, Kevin and Melissa went above and beyond and waited two hours for the event to finish. After waiting patiently in the hot sun, a campaign staffer approached them and took them to meet privately with the mayor. They told me that Rudy was very familiar with the ONE Campaign and told them that our work fighting AIDS in Africa was very important. Melissa even put the ONE band on the mayor’s wrist you see in the photo.
By uniting as ONE, we have a unique and historic opportunity to make sure that the next president of the United States knows that fighting global disease and extreme poverty in the developing world is an American priority.
I’m heading over to Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, CA, to watch the ten Republican presidential candidates enter their first debate of the 2008 elections.
Taking stage will be: Senator Sam Brownback of Kansas, former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, Representative Duncan Hunter of California, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, former Wisconsin Governor and U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson, Senator John McCain of Arizona, Representative Ron Paul of Texas, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Representative Tom Tancredo of Colorado.
We all want to hear about where the candidates stand on the issues surrounding extreme poverty, and you can still do your part by voting for this question to be asked at tonight’s debate: “Studies have found strong correlations between mass literacy and the presence of democratic political systems. What role would the expansion of primary education in the poorest parts of the world play in your national security platform?”
Watch tonight at 8pm EST on MSNBC, local NBC affiliates and streamed live on Politico.com, and stayed tuned for more notes from the field.

Mayor Rudy Giuliani was in town this morning for breakfast with some New Hampshire voters. In his speech, he gave a quick example about what it means to be a US Ambassador: He said that as an ambassador your job is in part to explain what America is to the world.
After the speech the mayor came around and shook hands with people in the room. I was able to give him a ONE band, which he recognized and put on.
Later, I was able to speak with Mayor Giuliani and told him that as a ONE member, I thought our US efforts to fight AIDS and extreme poverty in Africa show the world exactly the type of people Americans are.
Our efforts with the ONE Campaign represent a partnership between the best of Americans and of Africans. We are saving lives in the developing world and when we do so, we become ambassadors of our own country in the poorest nations.

ONE member Michael Castaldo lent his voice to the bottom billion people in the world this morning by catching up with Mayor Rudy Giuliani after he addressed a business group in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
You can see Michael in his ONE shirt with Mayor Giuliani, just before the mayor got on the bus today.
All over New Hampshire, ONE members are making sure that the world’s poorest people are not forgotten during the 2008 primary season. By coming together as ONE, we will ensure that all of the candidates, from both parties, know that fighting AIDS and poverty in Africa is not only possible, it is a priority!
Way to go Michael! And much more to come from New Hampshire.
Saturday morning was a cold one here in New Hampshire. I was up early as Mayor Rudy Giuliani was in town to give a speech in Manchester and greet some Granite State voters.
In the back room of a downtown theatre, I waited for my opportunity to speak with the mayor and let him know that when he comes to New Hampshire, he should be talking about global poverty and disease.
While I was waiting in the room, I ran into a few friends and ONE supporters at the event. Everyone was still talking about the president’s State of the Union speech and what they were doing to ensure that the president’s words become a reality. It seems that our issues and our message is really getting through to a lot of people here in the state.
Then the mayor walked in the room. He was surrounded by security, press and NH voters of all ages. When he finally made his way over to me, I was able to briefly speak with him and talk about what the ONE Campaign means and how we as Americans want more action to fight AIDS and poverty in the developing world. The mayor also brought up the State of the Union and when I gave him our ONE band, he put it on immediately!
I was proud to use my voice on behalf of the billion people that do not have a voice in the world. Here in New Hampshire, primary season has started much earlier than ever before, but by organizing and coming together as ONE, I am confident that we will make sure that the next President of the United States knows that we can and will make poverty history.
So put your white band on, bundle up, and speak out!
