Florida ONE volunteers Rafael Batista and Ryan Vassal made sure ONE was visible and our issues were heard at this Obama campaign event at the Pembroke Pines Charter High School cafeteria on August 11th. Gov. Bill Richardson hosted the event and told the volunteers: “ONE is a great organization.”

On Friday, August 15, ONE members from the Pembroke Pines Charter High School, located in Pembroke Pines, Florida, met with Representative Alcee Hastings (D-FL) to talk about the accomplishments of the school’s ONE chapter, which has over 150 members including students and faculty.
The passionate students, along with their teacher Ms. Danielle De Pas, spoke about how they got involved with the ONE Campaign and how they are energizing their peers to become educated about extreme poverty. The school’s charter has been so successful that the ONE movement is now spreading beyond Pembroke Pines High School into the neighboring school districts.
In response, Representative Hastings talked about the importance of engaging young people in the political process early on so that they can help make a difference for generations to come. He hopes that the upcoming election will bring an unprecedented number of young people out to vote who want their voices heard on issues such as extreme poverty.
At the end, he commended the work of the ONE Campaign and slipped on the ONE bracelet to show his support. We thanked him for cosponsoring PEPFAR (The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) and urged him to continue to support legislation that will alleviate global poverty.
The students, who are organizing a ONE event to be held at the school in January, invited the Congressman to attend and provide a few remarks. We are hopeful that he will be able to be there to show his support.

Here at ONE we are so excited about the Democratic and Republican National Conventions coming up in the next few weeks! The conventions are a perfect opportunity to interact with party delegates and officials from all over the country and ONE will be there to make sure to bring the issues of extreme poverty into the US political arena. We will have many events at both conventions, including a wrapped campaign-style bus with a state-of-the-art podcast station.
ONE is also hosting service projects for volunteers at both conventions. As many as 800 volunteers will assemble kits to distribute to caregivers who support people living with AIDS all over the world. In addition, ONE will be hosting panel discussions as each convention to engage and educate people on the issues of extreme poverty and global disease.
For those who live in Denver or Minneapolis, or plan to travel there for the conventions, you can sign up now to help with the caregiver kits at the DNC here and the RNC here. More information about the conventions will follow in the coming days.

Yesterday, John McCain was campaigning in Sparks Nevada and as always ONE was there to great him.
On the rope line as Senator McCain entered the town hall he spotted my ONE shirt and pointed it out to his wife. Having just returned from Rwanda with ONE it was a familiar sight. I was able to thank Cindy for traveling with ONE and asked her how the trip went. “Amazing,” she said, “it was fantastic.”
Well it must have stayed on her mind. Prior to introducing her husband, Cindy spoke to the packed high school auditorium about the ONE Campaign and her “incredible journey through Rwanda.” She went on to offer her support for the efforts by ONE to make fighting extreme poverty and disease a foreign policy priority during this election season, and for the many organizations on the ground in Africa “offering hope to mothers and children through selfless aid work and service.”
Mrs. McCain went on to comment about the strength of African families and noted that the key to fighting these dreaded diseases will be to empower African women and mothers.

Last Thursday August 7th five ONE Members and I attended the official campaign office opening for Barack Obama in Harrisburg, PA. The energy during the event was unbelievable! Our volunteers were able to speak to many people in attendance about ONE and our ONE Vote ‘08 initiative.
Mayor Steven R. Reed was the key note speaker for the evening. The Mayor gave an inspiring speech to a giant crowd that filled the office all the way out the front door! Our ONE members were also able to take a photo with Obama Regional Field Director Alex Kragie. Also pictured is Mayor Reed who was extremely receptive to the idea of Harrisburg becoming a ONE City!

Here in Colorado, everyone is talking about the Democratic National Convention. ONE members from around the state are thinking up ways to make the biggest impact on the delegates and candidates who will start flooding Denver later this month. During Friday night’s ONE Vote ‘08 Gallery Show we talked about ONE’s plans during DNC week, including assembling care packages for Africa, and attending a forum on international development and global poverty.
On the walls of the gallery were pictures of ONE members in Africa and ONE Vote ‘08 volunteers meeting with the presidential candidates on the campaign trail. The pictures captured the type of energy we want to produce at the convention. We also saw the latest ONE Vote ‘08 video, which showed the enormous success of the campaign so far.
The event was aimed at our most loyal members and getting them energized about future events - and it worked. There was a buzz around the room that lingered through the night as people kept having thoughts spring to their mind about who would be good to talk to about getting an article written about the care packages, or where we could set up a booth.
Doug Smith, one of the DenverONE moderators made the goal for our group very clear though: 400 volunteers at the care package event on the 25th. So if you live in Colorado we’re going to need you, and 3 of your friends, to help us out that day. Get involved in what we’re doing by joining the DenverONE page.
We had an awesome event last week, I know that energy will carry us to the DNC where I hope to see dozens of my fellow ONE members on every block.

This Monday the 4th, I began our August “crunch” to meet with our respective Congressman and Senators while they are in recess. Many members use the August congressional recess to host town halls and forums in their communities - so check out their websites for a schedule to meet up with yours. If you can go, wear a ONE T-shirt and use your voice for the world’s poorest people. These events are free and open to the public so it is a great opportunity to let your representatives in Congress know that you care about fighting extreme poverty and global disease.
My first town hall meeting of this August’s recess was with Congressman Christopher Carney. About 40-50 of his constituents came and spoke directly with the congressman about issues that are important to them.
After the meeting concluded, I was able to meet with Congressman Carney and his Chief of Staff. I made sure to thank him for his support of the AIDS, TB and Malaria funding bill PEPFAR and spoke with him about ONE Vote ‘08. Lastly, I mentioned a few of the amazing things our volunteers have accomplished in Pennsylvania and asked if it might be possible to set up a meeting with him and ONE members from his district.
All in all, this was a great experience and fantastic exposure for ONE and the world’s bottom billion people.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and philanthropist Bill Gates announced plans to raise $500 million for a campaign used to kick Big Tobacco – you guessed it – in the butt.
This is particularly significant for developing nations, as they are becoming popular targets for cigarette companies’ market demographic.
From the New York Times (Op-ed):
[Bloomberg and Gates’] target is a worthy one: tobacco companies and government-owned tobacco enterprises trying to addict hundreds of millions of new customers in the developing world as sales stagnate or shrivel in the industrialized nations…. The goal [of the campaign] is to reverse the rapid rise of smoking in such countries as China, India and Russia and to head off the epidemic in Africa before it can become entrenched.
Many countries have become addicted to the revenues generated by tobacco taxes or government-owned tobacco companies. They will have to be persuaded that the long-term health damage caused by tobacco far exceeds any short-term gain from tobacco revenues.
Bloomberg and Gates have already committed $375 to begin burning-out the competition – and plan on getting to the neediest countries before Big Tobacco does.
