To Err is Human, to Fight Poverty Divine

Many of us aren’t satisfied with the luxury of tap water. Instead, we drink bottled water, while 6 million people around the world are drinking unsafe water and exposing themselves to deadly diseases like typhoid, cholera and dysentery. Fortunately, there has been a lot of innovative thinking around the issue. For example, I just read about LifeStraw, a 10-inch purifier that makes surface water drinkable. It’s not perfect, but it’s an idea that deserves attention.

At DivineCaroline.com we’re giving changemakers a free platform to tell their stories and share their innovative ideas. Since we’re all involved with ONE.org, I thought you’d want to know how easy it is to publish stories, share reviews, and join forums at DivineCaroline.com . It’s just another place to spread the word on these important issues.

I admit, it’s sometimes hard to get my head around the stats on poverty, AIDS, human rights, and sustainability. But when I read a personal story behind the issue, it brings it all home for me. I believe that by sharing stories on DivineCaroline.com we’ll get more people to take action at ONE.org. Take just a minute to check out DivineCaroline and chime in with a rant, a rave, an idea, or a story of your own. Registration is fast and free. Hope to see you soon.

A Note of Thanks From Missouri Rep. Emerson

I am glad to congratulate the State of Missouri and the City of St. Louis on joining a worldwide movement to recognize the challenges faced by the world’s poorest nations and people.

Without question, disease, famine, and poverty are rampant afflictions that take the lives of millions every year while depriving many millions more of a future full of their potential. Solving these problems is a common interest in our state, our nation and our world. Regardless of political convictions, religious upbringing or personal background, those who fight for the world’s less fortunate are bound by their commitment to service and their concern for humanity.

I have long worked on hunger issues as a member of Congress, and there is one incomprehensible contradiction in this fight: the difference between our ability to fight hunger and our efforts to do so. Eliminating this difference requires us to follow up on the pledges made today with actions that target the sources of poverty’s ills. We can seek solutions through public policy, by contacting our elected officials, in our personal lives, and with faith-based institutions.

The challenges before us are significant, but our response is full of a uniting promise. I appreciate Governor Blunt and Mayor Slay for joining the efforts of ONE, and I thank you all for raising awareness about global poverty.

-Jo Ann Emerson, Member of Congress, 8th District – Missouri

I’m sorry that the congressional schedule would not allow me to attend the ONE Missouri event yesterday. But please know that you have my complete support and admiration for your efforts.

Ghandi once said that “poverty is the worst form of violence.” He was right. We hold in our own hands, the power to prevent and treat AIDS, end hunger, erase the burden of crushing debt, and move millions from dependency to self-sufficiency.

I commend the ONE Campaign for uniting people from all faiths and backgrounds, from all over the world, in this holy mission to alleviate suffering and bring wholeness to humanity.

Thank you for making St. Louis a “City of ONE.”

With best wishes for your mission.

-Wm. Lacy Clay, Member of Congress, 1st District – Missouri

Iowans Supporting ONE Vote

By Sarah Crouthers

These statements were released yesterday in support of the Iowa launch:

Ray Hoffmann, Chairman of the Republican Party of Iowa, issued this statement on the ONE Vote ’08:

“ONE Vote ’08 is a very important bi-partisan campaign that is making global health and poverty a priority for candidates in the upcoming election. The Republican Party of Iowa is 100 percent behind ONE Vote ’08 and their efforts to educate and involve voters in the political process by raising awareness of these global issues.”

Chairman Scott Brennan from the Iowa Democratic Party released the following statement in support of the ONE Vote ’08 Campaign:

“ONE Vote ’08 is a way for Iowans to bridge the partisanship that so often divides Democrats and Republicans; we can all unite behind the goal of ending extreme poverty around the world,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Scott Brennan. “As the First in the Nation Caucus, Iowa has a unique opportunity to encourage all presidential candidates to address the ways foreign policy and security will focus on saving lives by expanding global access to health services and education, while reducing the number of people living in hunger. I applaud these efforts and look forward to working with former Governor Terry Branstad and former Lt. Governor Sally Pederson in the fight against global poverty.”

Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa) released the following statement yesterday on the launch of the Iowa ONE Vote ’08 campaign:

“Extreme poverty is a deeply disturbing problem that breeds global instability and unrest. Taking a strong leadership role in eliminating global poverty will only make America stronger in the eyes of the world. I’m proud to be a part of Iowa ONE Vote ’08 to send a message to our next President that this issue is of critical importance.”

Rep. Dave Loebsack (R-IA) released the following statement yesterday on the launch of the Iowa ONE vote ’08 campaign:

“Thinking globally and helping others throughout the world has never been more important. I am proud to join the ONE Vote ’08 campaign because it is critical we elect a President committed to using our nation’s influence to help end global poverty. This is important for the future of America and the future of millions across the globe.”
