Rotary and ONE

This week, I joined more than 19,000 Rotary club members from more than 160 countries in New Orleans for the humanitarian service organization’s annual convention. I’ve spent the last three days camped out in the exhibitor’s hall, which is a room at least the size of a football field, filled with booths featuring Rotary clubs and projects and global networking groups.

For anyone who is not familiar with Rotary’s mission, I can best sum it with five words: Doing good in the world. Those five words run through my mind during every conversation I have had with a Rotarian since arriving at the conference. If you’d like to know more, I encourage you to check out Rotary’s website so you can learn how Rotarians work to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty.

Nearly 150 ONE super-members were in Washington, D.C. for ONE’s 2011 Power Summit, a four-day advocacy extravaganza. On the last day, they went to Capitol Hill to lobby Congress. ONE Regional Field Director Sara Donaldson shares her experience at Sen. Nelson’s office.

On Lobby Day, ONE leaders from Florida met with one of Sen. Bill Nelson’s staff members, Marin Stein. We discussed the importance of development through investments in agriculture and asked that Sen. Nelson support funding for agricultural development in the FY 2012 budget.

Additionally, we discussed the incredible impact vaccines have in the developing world and asked that Sen. Nelson sign on to a letter to USAID Administrator Raj Shah in support of a three-year pledge of 450 million to GAVI. We were even fortunate enough to run into the senator himself on our way out and were more than happy to meet his request for a picture with all his gators! We appreciate the support we have received from not only his DC office, but offices statewide.
