The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) dreams of a world without HIV. In fact, they don’t just dream about it. They’re doing something about it. They live to contribute to the process of preventing HIV infection, restoring hope and improving the quality of life of persons, families and communities affected by HIV in Uganda. Recently, I jumped in a truck with some TASO support staff to visit one of their remote clinics outside the capitol of Uganda, Kampala.

I’ve circled the globe for years –- an insatiable addict since I was 16. I fell in love with photographer Steve McCurry’s images of weathered faces lined with stories staring into the lens’ eyes like bottomless lakes. I wanted to capture the beauty of life the way he captured it. Yet, traveling in foreign countries is much less romantic than the pictures or movies lead you to believe. And capturing photos of people is a tricky business.
Inside me there’s a tug-of-war deeper than just how to capture a great photo. On one hand, I want to take a captivating image. On the other hand, I don’t want to exploit my subject for my own gain. The terminology even implies stealing. One “takes” or “captures” a photo like one traps an animal trying to run away.

The current line, which the country is entirely dependent on for their power, is reaching its limits in both capacity and lifespan. This project will double the power capacity of the island and provide reliable and non-polluting energy.

A few months ago, I had a chance to visit one of the Slums Information Development and Resource Centers (SIDAREC) in the Kibera slum of Nairobi, Kenya. It was established to promote and consolidate skills existing within slum communities, especially among youth. SIDAREC received the ONE award in 2009 and a grant of $100,000 for its innovative, Africa-led efforts to advance the Millennium Development Goals. As part of the program, they started a car wash to employ youth and help the community. Take a look at my photographs:

At the Chitsanzo Milk Bulking Group we learned that just one cow can turn around a family’s life. A key challenge facing many smallholder farmers is earning enough money to feed their families and send their kids to school. In Malawi, there is a real need for more dairy producers, because otherwise, milk must be imported from other countries. This makes milk more expensive and does little to grow incomes.
