Dozens of ONE campaign supporters from across the Palmetto State met today on the steps of South Carolina’s state capitol building.

While ONE volunteers have been busy attending campaign events throughout the state in recent weeks, today’s formal launch of ONE Vote ’08 was a major step forward in the home of the “First in the South” presidential primary.

Among the numerous South Carolina political leaders in attendance were former Governor Jim Hodges, former Superintendent of Education Inez Tenebaum, Greenwood Mayor Floyd Nicholson, and South Carolina Policy Council Vice President Ashley Landess.

In addition to dedicated volunteers and ONE field organizers, the rally was also attended by staff members from the presidential campaigns of Senators Clinton, McCain, and Obama, as well as former Governor Romney. This participation, from candidates of both parties, demonstrates the success of ONE organizers in bringing the issues of poverty reduction and disease prevention into the state’s political dialogue.

The rally was an exciting event that received solid media coverage from the local television stations and newspapers. The core message of poverty reduction and disease prevention in the developing world was well articulated and eagerly received.

Obama Moves Upstate

Senator and presidential hopeful, Barack Obama, visited South Carolina’s upstate on Friday, June 15. Over 1,000 people packed into Greenville’s McAlister Square to hear the candidate speak. This included a half dozen ONE staff members and volunteers.

Two energetic choirs provided soulful entertainment as the crowd waited on Senator Obama to arrive. Once on stage, his speech focused on the need to reorient American political culture into what he termed a “less timid, less selfish” politics.

While security was very strict and no personal photos or questions were taken, Senator Obama did specifically address the strong need for more aid to Africa and other countries suffering from extreme poverty. He explained that his campaign was dedicated to a vision of American leadership in the global fight against disease and economic suffering. ONE volunteers found the crowd to be excited about, and interested in, the ONE Campaign’s growing efforts here in South Carolina and across the nation.
