ONE pulled a lot of legs yesterday. We launched our new spot “I Predict” across the web and in an April Fool’s Day email to our members with a series of crazy predictions for what could happen by 2015 — “kittens will be banned from YouTube,” “Charlie Sheen will be president,” “fax machines will make a comeback.” We got your attention. Now we want you to act to support the one prediction that can actually come true: the beginning of the end of AIDS.

Where do your tax dollars go?

March Madness? How about tax madness? Ah, tax season. Whether it’s money you owe, or a refund coming your way, I’m sure you know how much it is. But if you’re like most us of, you likely don’t know where your tax dollars actually go. Think about it. Do you know how your tax dollars are spent? Don’t be discouraged, neither did I.

There’s so much talk in the news about social security, Medicare, and foreign assistance spending. It got us wondering how much we contribute to each. Well, thankfully we’ve now got a simple way for you to find out.

Today, we’re launching our new Interactive Tax Tool that shows you where your tax dollars go. Just enter your household income and you’ll see your tax money break down into eight categories -– national defense, social security, health, unemployment, Medicare, interest on US debt, foreign assistance and other. It’s not exact — it assumes you file as a single without exemptions — but you get the picture.

Click here to go to ONE’s Interactive Tax Tool

Most importantly, ONE’s tax tool reveals how only a small fraction of the US budget has already dramatically improved the lives of the poorest people on the planet, and how you personally have contributed to that effort. Together, Americans have helped put 5 million people on AIDS medication, halved malaria deaths in 11 African countries and saved the lives of 15 million children. Pretty amazing stuff.

Time and again, research has shown us that when people see how much good is being done for so little, their opinions on foreign assistance change. As a matter of fact, there’s no single message that effectively changes more skeptics into believers than the living proof of what has been accomplished for so little. The problem is, not enough people have seen this proof. That’s where you come in.

I’m asking you to not only check out the Tax Tool yourself, but to share it with all your friends. And ask them to share it with their friends too. Because the more people who see the proof that foreign aid is working, the more people will stand up to protect it. And after all, that’s what ONE is all about.

Interview: Sundance Channel’s Sarah Barnett on advocacy & the power of storytelling

ONE will be reporting live from the Sundance Film Festival in Utah from January 20 to 22. Stay tuned to the ONE Blog for more updates.

I’m here with a crack ONE team shooting a new short film about the beginning of the end of AIDS — what an incredible statement! Think about it: by 2015, we can actually turn the tide on an epidemic that has claimed 30 million lives over the past 30 years. But as with everything we work on, it won’t happen without you ONEers doing some heavy lifting — so stay tuned for what you can do to make the beginning of the end of aids a reality.

We wouldn’t be here without the generosity of our friends at Sundance Channel. They reached out to us a few weeks back and offered us free space to film, right next to where they are conducting there own interviews here at the Sundance Headquarters. Yesterday, I had a chance to chat with Sarah Barnett, EVP of Sundance Channel about the vision of Sundance, the power of community and how storytelling can help change the world. Take a look:

Production is going great. We’ve already filmed Allison Janney, Blythe Danner, Jason Ritter, Richard Jenkins, Julie Mond and many more. One of the real luxuries of my job is meeting so many talented people who believe in ONE and want to do their part to help — and this trip has been no exception.

Keep fighting the good fight, ONEers!

Correction: An earlier version of this blog post the author wrote that “our celebrity supporters shout out one four letter word that the majority of viewers will find offensive”. This was unintentionally misleading as not everyone featured in the PSA actually used this word. The post below has been corrected for accuracy:

ONE has been campaigning fiercely to wake the world up to the terrible tragedy happening in the Horn of Africa. More than 30,000 children have died in just three months, and honestly I can hardly wrap my mind and heart around it. Yet despite this, all I see is inaction. News coverage of the crisis is intermittent and governments around the world have yet to fill the $650 million funding gap needed to provide emergency services. And perhaps worst of all, none of this had to happen in the first place.

Oui! I believe we did.

By now, I’m sure most of you are aware that ONE members around the globe are raising their voices to help save four million children’s lives in the next five years, in part by vaccinating against the top two disease killers of children in poor countries: diarrhea and pneumonia. Each year, more children die from these two diseases than from HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined. But together as ONE we’re doing something about it.
