Watch the preview, set your DVR, and tell your friends. This one is not to be missed. (RED)’s new documentary film “The Lazarus Effect,” airs tonight at 9:00PM ET on HBO, 9:30PM ET on YouTube and 11pm GMT on Channel 4 in the UK.

For weeks, we’ve been sharing the work our friends at (RED) are doing to get the word out about “The Lazarus Effect” and its message that there is hope for people living with AIDS in Africa. Two pills a day, that cost around 40 cents, can help transform peoples’ lives from near death to health. And (RED) has gotten a great group of supporters together to drive that message home in their video to help promote the film:

You can show your support by donating your status on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #lazaruseffect. You can also find (RED) at www.twitter.com/joinred and www.facebook.com/joinred and sign-up to get their newsletter here.

Watching tonight and getting the word out is just the start. You can get involved and take action by checking out these (PRODUCT)RED products from some of the world’s most iconic brands, who direct up to 50% of the gross profits to The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. And, as a ONE member, you can make your voice heard in Washington, DC through our current “Fix This Budget” campaign, and join more than 20,000 people who have already told their senators to reverse proposed cuts to The Global Fund and other anti-poverty and disease priorities.

That means we’ll know soon if the Cardin-Lugar Transparency Amendment will make it into the final Senate bill.
More than 1000 ONE members have called their senators to ask them to vote for the amendment and back greater transparency, poverty alleviation and energy security. There’s still time to call your senators and urge them to support this critical legislation.

As you know, we’ve been aggressively encouraging members of Congress to support the president’s request for a $58.5 billion International Affairs Budget to fund proven solutions that are saving lives.

Now ONE has developed a new way for your to get in touch with your senators, in real time. Right now, senators and members of Congress are furiously typing away on keyboards and smart phones, trying to out-do one another and be the most effective at using Twitter to communicate directly with their constituents. If all of us send our senators tweets, you can be sure they’ll see and hear about it – some senators even update their accounts personally. They’ll know we’re turning the pressure up to make sure this year’s budget continues to support our anti-poverty priorities, such as eradicating malaria, treating AIDS and tuberculosis, promoting food security, and expanding access to clean water and basic education.

Click here to tweet @ your senator now. It’s fun, easy, and can make a huge difference.

The president’s Fiscal Year 2011 Budget Request includes $58.5 billion for the International Affairs budget, which funds almost all of our smart, proven and affordable efforts to fight global poverty and preventable disease. ONE is joining a broad coalition of NGOs, faith groups and others to send the letter below to senators and members of Congress urging them to support full funding for the International Affairs Budget.

ONE members are getting in on the action by Tweeting @ Congress in support of a strong International Affairs Budget.

You can get more details on the president’s International Affairs Budget here and the text of the letter is below.

Dear Member of Congress:

We the undersigned organizations support the president’s request of $58.5b, as the minimum amount needed for the International Affairs account for FY11. This amount is expected to be 1.4% of total outlays of federal spending in FY11.

Our support is based on factors as varied as our specific missions themselves. But we are united around a common belief that the budget for International Affairs is critical to U.S. foreign policy and our shared future with people and nations around the world.

That’s why we’re asking him to give “A Global Gift” and include $1.75 billion for the Global Fund in his Fiscal Year 2011 budget.

Click here or on the card below to send President Obama a holiday card reminding him how important it is for the US to invest in the global fund and the lifesaving work it does in the struggle against these deadly, but treatable diseases.

When you send President Obama a holiday card you’ll be reminding him that since 2003 the Global Fund has:

* Helped get lifesaving antiretroviral drugs to more than 2.5 million people and palliative care and prevention services for millions more;
* Placed 6 million people on tuberculosis treatment; and
* Provided 104 million bed nets to prevent malaria.

Add your voice and help keep this critical work going.

Yesterday, a few of us from ONE’s DC office took a day off from our usual work fighting global poverty to volunteer with an amazing organization called Food and Friends, located just a few metro stops away here in Washington, DC.

For more than 20 years, Food and Friends has been preparing, packaging and delivering meals and groceries to more than 1,400 people living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challenging illnesses in Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia.

Some of the volunteers we met have been helping out for more than 10 years, and with a little help from Chef Peter, Adam, Rena and I were soon chopping vegetables right alongside them. If our eyes seem a little puffy, that’s because we’d just (barely) made it through the onions, when Leah took the photo below.

While we were in the kitchen, others members of the ONE team were out delivering meals and smiles, unpacking boxes and taking care of the “friends” side of things, by calling to say ‘hi’ and check in on some of Food and Friends’ clients.

Robyn and Matthew boxing up meals for delivery

Pooja and Jen delivering meals

I’d be remiss not to mention how great the food was. It took a lot of self-control not to sample the Israeli couscous salad and orange custard we were packing up. Fortunately, we got to try a piece of tollhouse pie at the end of the day. It was delicious.

But Food and Friends is about much more than the wide variety of tasty and healthy food they deliver to people who need it. They have an incredible kitchen team who works closely with nutritionists to provide meals that meet a wide range of dietary needs. And along with the food, they provide companionship and support to clients and their loved ones and caregivers.

Thanks to Jane, Don and the whole team at Food and Friends for welcoming us and letting us help out with the important work you do. To learn more, check out the Food and Friends website and follow them @foodandfriends on Twitter.
