Wow. Since we launched ONE’s Next Top T-shirt challenge three weeks ago, more than 500 ONE members have sent us T-shirt design ideas. Their designs moved us, made us laugh and reminded everyone involved with this project that your creativity is a powerful force in the fight against global poverty.
The other judges and I had a tough time narrowing it down to three, but we’ve done it and now it’s time to vote for your favorite T-shirt.
And to say thanks, after you vote we’ll send you a coupon for 15% off from the ONE Store. Here’s a sneak-peek at the finalists:
The winning T-shirt will be available in black and white, and in both men’s and women’s styles in the ONE Store online. We’ll let you know which design took the top honors in an email next week. Make sure to watch for that announcement, because it’s going to include pictures of Connie Britton of Friday Night Lights and the guys from the multi-platinum band Daughtry modeling ONE’s new T-shirt.
But first, you have to decide which T-shirt they are going to wear. Vote now.

While all three T-Shirts designs are wonderful, why didn’t they accept or create one with the entire earth is shown, as well as putting faces of girls, boys, men, women, babies, young and older persons designed on the T-Shirt from all over the globe?
Hunger, while greater in some places, is still a global problem! And it is a problem in developed nations as well. And it will continue to grow, if the leaders of each nation don’t learn to regulate the ways markets are allowed to profit from poverty and the working class.

I second Gus Gomez’s comment, and would like to add that although the three shirt designs are very creative and present very powerful visual messages, I’m saddened that the image one focuses on is Africa. Despite the fact that Africa is the cradle, the origin where where our human journey began, the challenge of poverty, hunger, and disease is a worldwide problem, not one solely concentrated on the African continent.

I was comforted to note that when I looked at others’ comments, they were the same as mine. We all understand that Africa is a continent consumed by extreme poverty, but it’s not the only place. I got involved with the organization and concept of ONE in order to fight poverty around the world. PLEASE don’t create an official shirt for this organization that focuses on only one of the seven continents.
Blessings and much prayer.

I also agree with others here that the shirt should be more inclusive and that the design should focuss on bringing attention to the global challenge of poverty, hunger, and disease. In my humble opinion, I would have liked to vote on more than three shirts and possibly have a second round of voting for the finalist. Nonetheless, I voted for the shirt with the African continent shown as a mock newspaper clipping since it’s more expressive in One’s motivations (especially for those not familiar with the organization). Regardless, anything that brings more attention to this worldwide problem is always a step in the right direction.

As an American of “native American” descent, I was also a little challenged by the look of the two shirts featuring the African Continent alone. The Navajo people of the American Southwest live in as deplorable conditions as anyone else in the world. The face of hunger and poverty is universal and should be depicted as such. I voted for the orb shirt, feeling that it most exemplifies the world, but it’s really very close to the symbol that’s already available on ONE’s t-shirts, and it’s kind of hard to believe that none of the submitters took a more world-wide approach.
Nevertheless, the focus on poverty & hunger which ONE has been able to create is unparalleled and should make us all proud.

Hi
I have a suggestion to use bamboo fibre tee shirts as they are eco friendlier. Im not sure if they produce them Uganda yet, probably something set up.
the likes of what this company has. wbamboofiberdotcom
Cheers from NZ : )

These shirts look great, but all the same. When I did mine, i tried to think outside the box. I also agree with the others. I am alittle disappointed.

The final choices are good but not as creative as I had hoped. Since you allow for two colors, I had hoped to see something other than Black and white this time. Maybe next time you could allow ONE members to choose the finalists. Will we be be able to view the non finalists? Not just the 20 you have been showing in the gallery throghout the contest? I chose the Newspaper one since it at least had the word “Global” in the headline. Nice work to all!

Wow! I am not impressed at all! Being a professional graphic designer, I see two of the same and one that is like looking at drying paint.
Again, there is a global problem here and not just in Africa. I think ONE needs to be known around the world. None of these designs exemplify the criteria they were looking for:
“The right design has the power to go even further, and spark a global conversation. It starts with “I love your shirt, what does it mean?” and ends with greater awareness of the role we can all play in ending poverty and disease in some of the most vulnerable places on earth.”
November 16, 2009 at 10:39 am
I don’t mean to be a parrot, but I’ll have to go along with the majority here. Hunger affects more than just a single race/culture/country. A global map would be a better option. Perhaps a redesign of the Africa map into a global map?
Otherwise, I’ll have to vote for the circle as well.
November 16, 2009 at 1:47 pm
I agree with the others that all the designs are excellent, but should not focus on one continent. Also, the circular design does not give the viewer of the shirt any idea what the organization is about and I would think that was a priority, to spread the word. Frankly, I think it is wasteful to print hundreds of thousands of shirts that are primarily recognizable only to those who already belong to ONE. Yes, it could make them curious to ask, but many won’t.
Importantly, I would also like to talk about sizes. Many people who are poor or nutritionally deprived are large, as are many people who work for and support human equality. Yet, if I remember correctly your sizes only go to 1 or 2X. I think they should be available in 4X, 5X and maybe even 6X. Many also like a loose fit and would go for a larger size. We want these shirts to help ONE grow and prosper!!

Being that one of the designs up there is mine, i thought i would throw my 2 cents in. The year i became a ONE member was the year i traveled to Africa. I spent 13 days among those who suffer from poverty, aids, etc. This impacted my life in ways i cannot explain. When i received the email about this design contest my mind went straight to Africa, to those who i spent my time with, those who impacted my life. I made this design personal. Thats why i designed Africa like a big DNA Strand, to convey that we are all connected, we are all ONE. Yes i could have made it global. There is not a person that disagrees that poverty is something global. So whether you are “not impressed at all” or just hoped for something different, im sorry, this is what i was led to design.
November 16, 2009 at 5:05 pm
can’t say i care for any of them
November 16, 2009 at 9:48 pm
I was hoping to see a broader selection to choose from as well. Much of the work that I do is in my local area. I can’t travel to Africa, China, Cambodia, South America or other parts of the world that suffer from poverty and deprivation, but WOW, I can drive downtown and find it here in my own back yard. So, this is where I work.
ONE is a fight against poverty around the globe. And, yes, (RED) has a focus on Africa, but ONE’s focus is Around the globe. So the new T-Shirts should represent that or just stick with the ONE design.
The design with “ONE” written in so many different languages within it is a really original idea. It encapsulates the unity of people from all over the world working and standing as ONE. One step further and it could also be viewed as the Unit of “ONE” disseminating help to all of the countries that the languages represent.
Just my thoughts, Jennifer

I like all three designs but would have liked to have seen something more creative this year. Previous One shirts have included the African continent in much the same way it’s depicted here, as well as the one logo made out of smaller background elements, again very much like the one here.
When I did my designs to submit to this I specifically tried to create something different to what had been done before and show the logo in a new, original light, so it was rather disappointing to see a final three which really just repeats what’s been done before. I’m by no means implying mine should have been in the final three, just that it would have been nice to see a different take on the subject.
November 17, 2009 at 9:26 am
I voted for the circle because like many others I do not want to limit the impact that the awareness of this tee shirt could create by having the design focus only on the African continent. The problem is most definately worldwide and my hope is that our efforts to solve it are worldwide. That is what I want to support.

Thanks everybody for your interest in the campaign and for the vigorous discussion it has sparked. ONE as an organization has historically focused on Africa, where we have the most work left to be done on meeting the Millennium Development Goals of halving poverty and disease. However, that work is not to the exclusion of fighting poverty elsewhere. Many of the initiatives ONE members fight for, such as the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, malaria and TB, debt relief for heavily indebted poor countries and fast track support for education investment, have a global impact, helping reduce poverty in Africa and beyond.
We’re also lucky to work with some amazing partner organizations, who do important work on international and domestic poverty, as well as a host of other issues. You can learn more about that work and how you can get involved here: http://one.org/us/partners/ and under the partners tag on the ONE Blog: http://one.org/blog/category/non-governmental-organizations/one-partner/
As it says in our mission statement, “ONE is a grassroots campaign and advocacy organization backed by more than 2 million people who are committed to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa.” I think these designs do a great job of capturing that spirit.
It’s also worth mentioning that as excited as we are about this challenge, this will be only one of the many items for sale in our store and not ONE’s official sole or official T-shirt.
We’ll be announcing the winner of ONE’s Next Top T-shirt Challenge tonight, so I want to say thinks to everyone who submitted a design, voted in the challenge or shared their opinion. Your enthusiasm and interest surpassed our wildest expectations and we’ll definitely be taking all this feedback into consideration for next time.
Thanks for being ONE,
Aaron Banks
