We here at ONE were extremely saddened to hear of the death of Nelson Mandela’s 13-year old granddaughter, Zenani Mandela, reportedly due a car crash caused by a drink driver.
From today’s Guardian:
“The death of Zenani Mandela, who was on her way home from a pre-World Cup concert in Soweto, stunned South Africa on the day it was celebrating hosting the tournament. Mandela, who turns 92 next month, pulled out of an eagerly anticipated appearance at the opening ceremony to stay at home with family. Jacob Zuma, the South African president, passed on a message from him that said: “The game must start. You must enjoy the game.”
As an anti-apartheid activist who spent decades in prison fighting for what he knew to be right, and as the first South African president chosen in an election open to all the people of South Africa — he remains one of the greatest leaders in the world today.
We’ve been so grateful for his support for ONE’s work over the years — and our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Mandela and his family.

Thanks Virginia for this very important post. All of our hearts are with the Mandela family in their time of grief. Madiba has been a role model & hero to many of us, but often in admiring people’s courage and accomplishments, we forget that they are as human as ourselves.
As a mother who has lost two children early in their lives, I can fathom the depth of loss that the Mandela family is feeling right now. I hope that they keep with them the knowledge that our loved ones never really leave us – we carry them always within our hearts. ~
All the Best, debbie

What a giant and personal hero to us all. It seems impossible to fathom that even more challenges have crossed his path. I was shocked and saddened by the news. We embrace you and your family at this very tragic time. May you find solace in knowing that you prepared South Africa for this wonderful opportunity where you are sharing your wonderful country and continent with the world. Let’s hope other African leaders follow in kind. The time for change is now.

My heart and prayers go out to the Mandela family. I am a mother of 4 which 2 are in spirit, but that kind of loss stays with you. God is the only one that can get you through this and he will. She is always with you, our loved ones never truly leave us. My heart broke when I heard the news and I understand the pain. Please know God answers prayers and he will be there always. God bless you.
