This World Malaria Day the Chicago group of ONE organized a malaria awareness and soccer event to “kick it to malaria”! Despite the rainy and cold weather several dedicated ONE friends and volunteers stood tall, physically undisturbed and emotionally engaged, as I described what malaria is and where we stand in the fight against this deadly disease – still the killer of 3,000 children every day. Many asked thoughtful questions, as we engaged in a brief discussion.

We proceeded to play a game of soccer in the rain – a fun activity for all involved – excited young adults in their 20′s to committed parents in their 50′s.

In the week prior to the event, Mayor Daley of Chicago signed a letter showing his support for ONE’s work against malaria and commending the efforts of Chicago ONE volunteers. In addition, Chicago Fair Trade donated a fair trade soccer ball to be used at the event and a local restaurant – Dapper’s East – contributed by donating $50 (5 bed nets) to Malaria No More.

I was happy to see my community get involved in World Malaria Day and I am excited for (better weather and) even more impactful local ONE events in the coming months.
