Check out this guest post from ONE member Judith Myers, who I got to meet Saturday at the workshop in Rock Hill, South Carolina. She joined other ONE members yesterday to deliver the letters they’d written directly to Congressman Spratt’s in person. -Chris

Today turned out a lot better than expected. After waking up late and dreading class (as usual), I took out my agenda and turned it to this week. With so much highlighted (which means tests, quizzes, or projects due) for the week, I took a closer look at Monday, April 12. The word ONE was just as large as Glee that was circled on Tuesday. I then smiled and thought to myself “Today, I’m going to make a difference.” At 3:15, after I ran out of the Music building, I met both Jessica and Hannah at the front of campus.

Sporting our ONE t-shirts, we drove over to the Courthouse to deliver our first stack of letters. We met up with Phillip downtown and walked into the Courthouse together. We rode up the elevator for three floors to Congressman Spratt’s office. We met Charlie in the office and explained who we were and what we were doing with the letters. He took a look at them, and then said “hold on a second.” About a minute later, he came back and said “come with me.” We walked back with him and walked into another office: Congressman Spratt’s!

Congressman Spratt introduced himself as we walked in and was excited to see that there are students who truly wanted to make a difference. We got a great picture with Congressman Spratt as we were handing over the letters to him. I feel it was a very successful trip to the Courthouse. We walked across the street and handed Senator Graham’s letters to his office as well. He, unfortunately, was not present and was unable to meet with us. Next time, Senator Graham, next time.

ONE experienced a great thing today. As members of ONE, we were able to meet with Congressman Spratt and show him how much we support and are encouraging this bill to pass. In Rock Hill, ONE members will continue to do what can be done to make a difference and to get others involved. Be on the lookout for a ONE Campus Challenge coming soon from Winthrop University!
