The book half the Sky is superb. Unfortunately the CARE “movie” with the same name was extremely disappointing – it was a telethon for CARE. I expected more stories from the book and a rich discussion around the challenges women and girls face around the world and what we as concerned and caring individuals can do to help; instead we got thin synopses and repeated requests to give money to CARE. Apart from the short movie about Woineshet, the young Ethiopian woman who challenged the practice of marriage by abduction, there was nothing substantive in the “movie”. CARE and the book’s authors missed a fantastic opportunity to inform and galvanize Americans around the very important issues facing women and girls, surely we can do more than just give to CARE.

Hi Marie-Ange, that’s great that you’re interested in mobilizing to help women. I’m currently working with Pathfinder International, one of the nonprofit organizations that helped Woinshet. We were so glad to see her amazing story get shared. I agree with you that Half the Sky is a wonderful book and I also understand your frustration regarding the repeated donation requests.

If you’re looking for a simple, creditcard-free, action you can take around International Women’s Day check out http://www.Girl2Woman.org. Every time someone shares the videos on the site with a friend, $1 is donated to Pathfinder International to support reproductive health care for women and girls worldwide. Pathfinder is trying to reach 200 thousand video shares by International Women’s Day (March 8) in honor of the 200 million women who want but lack access to contraceptives. It’s an ambitious goal so we need all the help we can get! Would love it if you helped share!
