We’ve written before on the ONE Blog about TOMS Shoes, so I thought readers might be interested in this great editorial that founder Blake Mycoskie has in the Huffington Post. He talks at length about the mission behind TOMS Shoes, and how he ended up where he is today.

Excerpts below, full piece here

The first mission, and the one most relevant to my time in Southern Ethiopia, is my desire to eliminate unnecessary human suffering through the distribution of new shoes. In one of the very rural areas on my trip, I had an epiphany that might seem like common knowledge to many. But to me, it was a way of looking at the need for shoes in a totally different perspective. In the areas of the greatest poverty, which often are also extremely remote, a willing person can build shelter, grow food and they can even seek elders and teachers to learn from, but it is highly unlikely that they can make a pair of shoes. Shoes require factories, machines and materials not typically found in nature. So in these areas, if there are diseases to be contracted in the absence of shoes, these people have little hope of escaping them. This is why we must continue to give aid in these areas, and while I am a big believer in teaching someone to fish instead of giving them fish, in this case, we must give them fish in order for them to learn other things that will allow them to improve their lives. Our work to prevent Podoconiosis, and our efforts to help raise the necessary funds to treat it, fall into this category and mission.

Blake Mycoskie is an truly amazing person. TOMS Shoes has now donated over 150,000 to children in need. My wifes birthday was last week and all she wanted for her birthday were some black TOMS Shoes. Needless to say I checked every store in town and all everyone had were the Black “Glitter” TOMS, that she of course specifically said not to get. Therefore I turned to the web to buy the shoes. At my church group last week I learned of YourCharityStore.com. All I did is start at there website then click on TOMS shoes and purchased a pair of plain black TOMS Through the TOMSSHOES.com website. The cool thing about this is that Not only did TOMS Shoes donate a pair of shoes to a child in need but YourCharityStore.com also donated a percentage of my purchase to their featured Charity of the month: Your Christmas Foundation. I paid the exact same and donated probably three or four dollars to charity. I just thought that this was a cool website so I figured I would leave a comment. I love the Post.. Keep it coming.

I mean how amazing is Toms Shoes. They give away a pair of shoes for every single pair some one purchases, and they go ahead and work tirelessly to eradicate the terrible disease of podoconiosis. If there were ever a model for a 21st century company, this is it.
