We Have a Winner!

Last month we did something we’ve never done before. We asked ONE members to design a new T-shirt. At the time, we had no idea what to expect, but your response was nothing short of staggering.

ONE members from around the globe submitted more than 500 designs, our expert judges selected 3 finalists and more than 58,000 of you voted for your favorite. And now, we have a winner in ONE’s Next Top T-shirt challenge.

The winning T-shirt design, seen below, came from Valerie Strecker of Slidell, Louisiana and it’s available for pre-order in black and white, and in both men’s and women’s styles from the ONE Store.

As Chalya Shagaya said in the email kicking off this contest, “What we wear says a lot about who we are…The right design has the power to go even further, and spark a global conversation. It starts with “I love your shirt, what does it mean?” and ends with greater awareness of the role we can all play in ending poverty and disease in some of the most vulnerable places on earth.”

Hopefully this T-shirt, and all the other great stuff available in the ONE Store, can play a small role in starting that conversation. Because we know the power of your voice in the fight against global poverty, and now we also know the power of your creativity.

A big thank you to everyone who submitted a design. We’re all inspired by your talent and commitment. Also, to our judges who had the very difficult task of choosing our two runners-up: Alex Robbins and Danny Hass.

Keep watching your email for more on our new T-shirt, because later this week we’ll be photographing the guys from the multi-platinum band Daughtry and “Friday Night Lights” star Connie Britton wearing the shirt. We’ll be sending those photos your way, along with an opportunity to order the shirt. But there’s no reason to wait, visit the ONE Store to pre-order your shirt (they also make great holiday gifts!) today.

    Hey Valerie Strecker,

I really LOVE your design and that was why I voted for it. I am glad it came through. If you have a website with your work it would be nice to post it.
For the other entries, GREAT job for coming up with a design. I didn’t even know where to start.

Valerie, you are a real graphic designer. Congrats !!!!. I voted for the other African design, but am happy to purchase your great work plus effort, for such a crisp point of view.
I flew from South Fl. to help secure Slidell, LA. after Hurricane Katrina for almost a month. I am glad for you and the best to you and all from your community in a solid and strong future.
Thanks again Valerie for a great effort.

    Thank you, Katherine and Anna!!

    Hello, Nathan!

Thanks so much for your vote and congrats! It has been such an amazing experience and I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity to use my creativity to represent the tremendous movement that is ONE. FlyingFishArt.com features some of my past graphic design projects. I’m presently working to post current work on my newly created Facebook Page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Valerie-Strecker/192306796971

    Thanks, Kenenethdelano!

Glad to have you rock the tee! And thank you so much for your investment of time and energy in the recovering of my city. Just a year after my dad past away from Leukemia, Katrina struck our community and dropped eight trees on our home, with one through our roof. And we were the “fortunate” ones. But something beautiful formed from the sludge and rose from the flood lines that marked our residence. When thousands of people came in from across the States in a united effort, not only was hope brought to the Gulf Coast, but a faith in humanity and all that can be achieved when we join together as one!

Congrats to Valerie and the runners up, Alex and Danny!!!
It was a very hard decision but in the end I voted for her shirt. Why? The whole idea of the shirt is to draw attention to the design, which will draw attention to our cause. I think the shape of Africa draws more attention than a circle would. Just my opinion.

Hey you guys… Sloan and Steve,

After placing your vote you should have received an email with subject “Confirm your T-Shirt vote!”. In that email there is a link that you than have to click on to confirm your vote and get your 15% off coupon code. If you guys still have the confirmed email hopefully the link will take you to the correct page. But with the voting now closed, I’m not sure. Good luck guys!

Congrats, however, I do not like this T-shirt as much as the others. Perhaps I am too sensitive, but the artistic discourse behind a shirt where a ONE logo is plastered in the middle of Africa is too much. Words such a poverty and disease do NOT describe Africa and it is wrong to represent it that way. I believe it is important to understand the representations presented because so many things in today’s world is encouraging this “dark and doomed” continent rhetoric. Although it might be silly to fuss over a shirt and whether it really makes a difference…this is part of the message so it does. of course, ONE’s efforts are tremendous. Yet ONE’s work and ‘achievements’ should not be filling up the continent of Africa. We are all being the ONE Campaign, but how about getting behind Africa? Understanding (or trying) all that there is to the continent, what countries are behind those words, their histories and culture …the good, will better able us and ONE to aid and eradicate the bad. Because ONE is trying to work WITH African countries as it’s main partner. Let’s show that.
