I recently had the opportunity to attend a town hall meeting on campus featuring Senator Arlen Specter (D-PA). In case you didn’t know, Senator Specter recently became a cosponsor of S. 624, the Senator Paul Simon Water for the World Act of 2009 sponsored by Senators Richard Durbin (D-IL) and Bob Corker (R-TN). S. 624, known as the Durbin-Corker Water bill would provide 100,000,000 people with first-time access to safe drinking water and sanitation on a sustainable basis by 2015 by improving the capacity of the United States Government to fully implement the Senator Paul Simon Water for the Poor Act of 2005. You can urge your Senator to support this critical life saving legislation here.

During Senator Specter’s town hall meeting, I was given the opportunity to thank him for his support of S. 624. After explaining the bill to the other students gathered, I offered Sen. Specter a ONE band as a sign of his support for this and other ONE issues. He accepted and asked me to put it on for him. He wore it for the rest of the meeting!

Senator Specter explained to everyone in attendance the importance of being able to access clean water and the how it affects millions of peoples’ daily lives. The Senator also indicated that S. 624 is just the type of legislation he looks for and was happy to support it. It was a great meeting and it was fantastic to have ONE play such a pivotal role in the meeting. Over 100 students and local news media were able to hear about the Water for the World Bill and ONE’s mission. Hopefully, Sen. Specter will continue to support ONE’s other legislative priorities in the future!

Rock on! Nice job! Reminds me of the good old days of the ONE Vote ’08 Campaign when politicians were getting banded left and right.

Well, it OUGHT to be a bi-partisan act. Lately I haven’t seen anything of substance that would qualify.
