In Sunday’s edition of the New York Times, ONE co-founder Bono has an op-ed column entitled “Rebranding America.” Part of his series with the paper, the column focuses on President Obama’s September speech at the UN, in which he re-committed America to the Millennium Development Goals. Specifically, Bono highlights these 36 words from the President:
We will support the Millennium Development Goals, and approach next year’s summit with a global plan to make them a reality. And we will set our sights on the eradication of extreme poverty in our time.
Excerpts from the piece below. You can read the full column here.
They’re not my words, they’re your president’s. If they’re not familiar, it’s because they didn’t make many headlines. But for me, these 36 words are why I believe Mr. Obama could well be a force for peace and prosperity — if the words signal action.
The millennium goals, for those of you who don’t know, are a persistent nag of a noble, global compact. They’re a set of commitments we all made nine years ago whose goal is to halve extreme poverty by 2015. Barack Obama wasn’t there in 2000, but he’s there now. Indeed he’s gone further — all the way, in fact. Halve it, he says, then end it.
Many have spoken about the need for a rebranding of America. Rebrand, restart, reboot. In my view these 36 words, alongside the administration’s approach to fighting nuclear proliferation and climate change, improving relations in the Middle East and, by the way, creating jobs and providing health care at home, are rebranding in action.
These new steps — and those 36 words — remind the world that America is not just a country but an idea, a great idea about opportunity for all and responsibility to your fellow man.

Thanks Chris for this blog post. It’s been awhile since we’ve last heard from Bono as a NY Times op-ed contributor….and he couldn’t have chosen a better weekend or a better topic to comment on – the Millenium Development Goals.
It is important that ALL of us who support the goals of ONE contact the NY TImes to give our thanks to them for allowing Bono the opportunity to SPEAK OUT & to STAND UP this weekend for the end of extreme poverty in our world.
The more we STAND UP in support of the person who co-founded this organization (Bono), the quicker we will get the money necessary to fund the programs which will accomplish our goals & allow every human being the opportunity to live in peace & dignity in our world.
Lofty goals? Yes. But I’m proud to STAND UP AS ONE with Bono & the millions of others around the world this weekend who are recommitting themselves to the fight against extreme poverty in our world.
THANK YOU, BONO, for everything.~
ALWAYS FOREVER, ONE – debbie

David Lane referenced these 36 words last night at our Take a Stand against Poverty event. I believe America has great opportunity right now … and each voice, one voice, every voice makes a difference!

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have been trying to write to so many different corporations to some avail, majority of e-mails are undeliverable. I hope you receive this, I also hope you can find it within your heart to help us with our cause.
I am writing regarding STAND at Queens College (CUNY). We are attempting to get as many donations and grants as possible to help refugees in Africa and help those in this horrific genocide. Last year we had several donors and were able to transform our campus into a refugee Campus to spread awareness, this current project will directly benefit those in need. We are in the process of contacting as many people as we can help us attain any funds available to assist us. Not only to curtail the effects of war on innocence in Africa, as well as other main issues which you can see by visiting our web site. All monies will be directed to the areas of your choosing; buying solar stoves ($30 per unit), mosquito nets, school supplies. We already have a wonderful Jewish organization working with us to bring such necessities to parts of Africa.
I am not only asking for donations, I am also asking for lists that you may have to assist us along. Via Queens College (CUNY), we were able to raise $10,000 for our cause; we need your assistance as well as the help of others for donations, grants, and lists of private donors.
I thank you in advance for your attention and cooperation. My e-mail address is Mistique642@aol.com and you can see what we have done thus far at http://www.standnow.org/chapter/queens. Thank you once again for your time; I am anxiously waiting for your response. Our address is: Queens College, 65-30 Kissena Boulevard – Flushing, New York 11367-1597.
Sincerely,
Antonio Vittiglio
Public Relations and Fundraising
P.S. This cause is of such importance to me, which is why I am in the process of going to Africa next year.

Since the NY Times decided NOT to post my comments about Bono’s op ed about the MDG’s in their paper today, I’ll post my comments here. Maybe my comments weren’t confrontational enough to make their paper….Go Figure. (lol)
No matter what, I will always be AS ONE with all of you. Thank You, ONE.
ONLY LOVE, debbie ~
I would like to add MY SUPPORT FOR BONO & THE END TO EXTREME POVERTY, most ably to be accomplished through the fulfillment of the Millenium Development Goals. I would also like to thank the NY Times for giving this issue the attention that it deserves on this STAND UP weekend.
The simple fact is that the U.N. adopted the Millenium Development Goals a decade ago, signed by all of the world’s leading economic countries, which brought a sense of real hope to MILLIONS of people around the world that finally we, as an international community would unite around these goals and, in the process, establish a more equitable & peaceful earth for all of us to inhabit.
The sad fact is that we are falling fast behind the scheduled date to accomplish the MDG’s (2015) due mainly to the obscene amount of money which has been “redirected” from programs like the Global Fund (www.theglobalfund.org)& other development programs focusing on education, health care & clean water in the world’s poorest areas in order to supplement the overblown egos & budgets of failing multinational corporations on Wall Street.
We have literally taken food out of the mouths of poor women & children in Africa and Asia in order to give that very same money to Wall Street CEO’s who haven’t shown our country the simple fact that they will use their “stimulus” money in a way to benefit the American People.
In the meantime, MILLIONS of us around the world have banded together AS ONE in the whiteband movement. (www.whiteband.org). This weekend around the world, we are attending events that demonstrate our commitment to the MDG’s…..and we show no sign of giving up our goal of the end to extreme poverty in our world.
Thus, THIS MOVEMENT IS NOT ABOUT BONO, IT IS ABOUT US – standing together & speaking in one voice in support of the MDG’s and to let our elected politicians know that we are still here, still active & that we will continue to watch them and how they attend to our issues.
THIS IS THE AMERICAN WAY – and I am proud to be part of this movement. I encourage all who read this to JOIN US AS ONE and become a part of a movement that has produced REAL RESULTS in lives saved (over 4 MILLION Africans are alive & productive citizens of their countries due to U.S. efforts to end extreme poverty).
THANK YOU, BONO, for always being willing to take the hits which come from speaking the truth in our world. May you continue to walk on “the journey of equality” for a long time & gather more support for our movement. The poorest people in our world deserve no less than our best efforts on their behalf and you could be no better public face for our movement.~
ONLY LOVE, debbie:)

‘A lot of ONE Campaign people and global leaders from Russia to Washington DC, Millennium Project, Transparency Internationale and United Nations have visited my web site and read through the posts numerous times
Healing A Nation-The World as We Know It http://endrunlv.wordpress.com/
As a fellow member of ONE .. If Bono would only visit and read my articles as others have repeatedly (per tracking reports) he would know that we are both on a close track in ideals and perspective, but that we are close spiritually.
As reflected in my posts there is much more than meets the eye.
One Twitter @endrunlv people follow closely as I comment while connecting the dots in the research
Please ask Mr Hewson to read and know that there are like minds and more than meets the eye if we want to resolve issues.’
Cheers,
Gary

Everything in your blog is inspiring! But for once I would love to read bout the steps being taken for the middle and low income AMERICANS ! I think that we need to fix America,by thinking about our country first. Fix the deficit and give tax breaks to small Business’s in local area’s suffering the most unemployment rates. Stop saving cats and dogs in different countries, and wasting money!!!!
Help for someone like me(white male/divorced), is non existent in the U.S.A., today. As Obama, just found a cool million, for doing his job. most people in Florida are losing their jobs. Something needs to be done here first. I can’t even get a flu shot because of a shortage!!!! I’m supposed to believe that?
Everyone wanted a change and voted for Obama, well things have changed for the worst! Witch I was afraid of since he made it trough the primaries. If everyone really wanted to change this country,(witch I don’t think the rich do). We would start focusing on changing the HOUSE, and CONGRESS!!!!! Make them get elected every 4 years and a max of 6 to 8 years, and make lobbing a felony. And a felony and instant termination for any member of the government, that accepts any gifts or benefits for their vote.
I believe if you Obama really wanted to change things, he would have taken the nobel route, and kept the peace prize, and denied the COOL MILLION. As far as I am concerned,it was a gift. Just like it was from a LOBBYIST! WITCH HE HIMSELF IS SUPPOSED TO BE AGAINST. BUT EVEN OBAMA DIDN’T TURN IT DOWN. So how is going to fight lobbyist’s? Of course thats nothing when the banks are PARTING OF AMERICANS HARD EREDEN SWEAT!
Well everyone wanted change? We got it! The rich re getting fatter everyday, and hard working Americans are losing their jobs, houses and cars!
“Go back to SCHOOL” OBAMA SAY’S. I did that 20 years ago. I just got all my student loans paid off last year. Sure I want to go back to COLLAGE! But how do
I pay my bills while I change careers AGAIN? And with so many men and woman going back to school, what field won’t be flooded in 4-6 years?
America was an Idea! but now is a reality that Big banks and businesses, or politicians are the only ones that know how to get around the laws and get free money, no questions asked! All I have to look forward to is no retirement, and no American dream!
It is a crime to rob a bank! Why is it not a crime to rob the AMERICAN PEOPLE!!
I HAVE WORKED HARD ALL MY LIFE FOR A HOUSE AND A PIECE OF LAND, THE CHANGE WILL BE, TO LOSE EVERYTHING I WORKED VERY HARD FOR ALL MY LIFE!
Just my opinion!!!! But I think a lot of Americans are in the same state. And still don’t grasp the trouble we are in, as middle class Americans. We don’t exist anymore!

Why do they call me a Socialist when I voice my opinion that everyone in the world, including animals, should have the right and access to food, shelter and health care. And is Socialism so bad? The Danish seem perfectly happy. Maybe Capitalism should exist for those that can run with it and Socialism should be in place as the base line for everyone. Imagine if all Dictatorships and Communistic countries transitioned into Socialism before trying for Capitalism. I would sleep better at night knowing all creatures had these three simple things as a right for existing and as a given. And lets not forget love. We all need to be loved
I lose sleep over Africa and I fight with my creator about all this I see. I wish others cared as much as we do. Thank you ONE for everything you do. You are my salvation in this horrible hell we call earth
Las Vegas ONE Member. p.s. I signed up about 120 new members and I left before we went to the circle. I was tired
The crowds that attend U2 concerts are the most awesome humanitarians in the world. I will support anything Bono does and he is one of the greatest humanitarians in the world and in my view, there is no better compliment one can receive. Nothing else matters

I hear what you are saying and I understand your view point. Here is another way to look at this: Help the weakest first. Fix the sickest and most horrific crimes in the world first and work your way back in to the lesser of evils. Witch Doctors are not cutting the limbs off of Albinos in America and telling men afflicted with AIDS to rape infants. Americans do not have their homes torched in the middle of the night in raids that are unspeakable. Africans have few voices and few that will fight to stop the atrocities and even less that care. America has the money and the ability to fix all of its problems and if those problems are not getting fixed, vote them out. I need good health insurance. I lost 75% of my income. But I own my home, I have clean running water, I drive a Mercedes and have 20 extra pounds because I eat well. Instead of crying for myself, I rather see someone in Africa get medicine today because I know I will be okay another day. They might not. They live in hell. I say this with respect to your comments. I just wanted you to know that there are people all over the world that cannot stand to see what is going on in Africa and feel helpless. In fact, I hear over and over that Americans have the highest rate of depression and I could talk about this for an hour. I think some people might think that is because we are spoiled. I would like to share this thought with you. When I get depressed, it is over knowing that others in the world live in hell and I can’t do enough to help them. I think Americans are wonderful and giving people and I hope the world understands that we are not spoiled. We know what we have and we want others to have at least what we have. Knowing they don’t causes great depression in me. My happiest day will be when every man, woman, child and animal has at least food, shelter and heath care. I am not sure I can be happy until this exists. America has the ability to fix any and all of their problems. We have the money, the power, the brains, the capitalists, the humanitarians, the teachers, the doctors…we lack nothing but a government with compassion. A bunch of politicians that go to church that do not know GOD. If they can’t help us, then it is up to us. Start with your family, your neighbor, your coworker, your community. If everyone did good things everyday to help each other, the circle would eventually embrace us all
Ask yourself everynight when you go to sleep: Whose life did I improve today?
