Why Africa

In my job as President of the African Development Bank, I see the potential of Africa every day. But it is necessary that the G20 see that potential, too -— and include Africa in their plans for a new global economic foundation.

That is why I support ONE in asking the leaders of the G20 nations to hold an upcoming summit in Africa. Bringing the G20 to Africa would make it impossible to ignore the role Africa must play in any successful global economic recovery. You can click here to sign ONE’s petition below and add your voice to this urgent campaign.

The petition reads:

Dear G20 Leaders,

Please hold an upcoming G20 Summit in Africa, and see for yourselves how its one billion people can be part of the global economic recovery.

As this group of twenty of the most powerful world leaders gather in Pittsburgh this week, I hope you’ll join me in asking them to host an upcoming summit in Africa and see for themselves that Africa is part of the solution.

-Donald Kaberuka, President, African Development Bank

I have signed a petition to have the G20 summit in Africa though I have reservations as to what country One.org has in mind that would host it. Africa has potential as a buying power though there are a lot of problems that different countries are faced with and that includes poverty, illiteracy, untreatable curable diseases that curtail productivity, nepotism, corrupt government officials and life time presidents, embezzlement of donor funds, insecurity and a slew of other problems. These rich countries look at this laundry list and dispel the economic buying power and emerging economies of African countries. I think individual African countries must assess themselves first so that when the G20 countries descend to the chosen African country they show case the strides made in regards to the above challenges Africa is faced with. We Africans/citizens of the continent must start holding our leaders accountable to the plight of the masses if we must move center stage to be heard and inform the world we have something to offer as far as the global economy is concerned. Until our house is in order, rich countries will continue to ignore us and discount us altogether. We must change and be our brother and sisters keeper not myself and tribes men keeper the African kind of politics. This kind of politics and governance has not served us well.
