As we get ready to begin our live chat with our policy team on President Obama’s trip to Ghana, I wanted to compile a short list of articles on the visit. It’s getting a lot of press, so I’ll try to keep up and update when I can.
Washington Post: Obama offers blunt, optimistic message
“President calls on African nations to seize control of their future by building strong, democratic institutions and eliminating corruption.”
New York Times: In Ghana, Obama preaches tough love
“President Obama traveled in Africa as a potent symbol of a new era but also as a messenger with a theme: help is on the way, but take responsibility for yourselves as well.”
Washington Times: Obama: Africa at moment of ‘promise’
“To adoring crowds, and with a nod to his own success as an African-American, President Obama on Saturday used this relatively stable democracy to challenge the rest of Africa to rise above conflict and corruption as they seek to gain the world stage.”
Associated Press: Obama in Ghana: ‘Africa not separate from world affairs’
“An American president who has “the blood of Africa within me” praised and scolded the continent of his ancestors Saturday, asserting forces of tyranny and corruption must yield if Africa is to achieve its promise.”
And CNN’s running this excellent report with some background and context for Obama’s visit to Ghana:

I have a problem. I voted for Obama but I don’t think he is following through with some critical things. It bothered me what he said about no democracy existing if it’s leaders exploit the ecomony to enrich themselves. That is exactly what has happend in America!!! GOVERNMENT and CORPORATOPMS should be separate just as church and state are separate in America. But Obama put ex-Goldman Sach officials in key positions in his administration: Secretary of Treasury etc. Please read this article: The Great American Bubble Machine | Corrente and this interview: http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/04032009/watch.html
How can you solve a problem if you don’t take those individuals out of power who created the problem, how can a democracy truely function for the good of the people if the fat cats of big corporations are in key political positions? Obama has left them in power: those who created the economic crisses. And it bothers me tremedously when he spoke those words because he is not addressing the issue fully. We have placed our hope in Obama but I believe he has made some hugh mistakes already. Please read and watch those links, in a true democracy we have freedom of speech and thought and to be well informed we need to listen to others opinions and critical thought and then hold our elected officials to do what is truely right and not just give us lip service.
