I think before people go off shouting about how great this article is and what a hypocrite Dambisa Moyo is they (and the article's author) should READ THE BOOK. Dambisa Moyo starts the book quite clearly explaining that she is not against humanitarian aid and even uses in her book and in all her interviews the example of scholarships as a good (though not sustainable) use of funds. She also does not say NGO's shouldnt operate in Africa though she makes the argument -which shouldnt even need to be made- that it isnt their place to do what the government can and should be doing.

She discusses the impact of aid on African governance and makes a case for African countries to ween themselves off it. This article is a complete misrepresentation of her views.
As an african who went to rural public schools and has had to wait in line for various government bureaucracies to get essential social services such as drugs for Malaria when I was 10. I can tell you aid isnt helping - free money isnt a solution that the West has EVER used for themselves why do they continue to give our governments incentives to ignore their people?
Live in Africa- don't just come for Safari and then maybe you will understand what she is talking about.

Here is the link to Mr. Easterly's op-ed piece that Diane mentioned above:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/william-easterly/sachs-ironies-why-critics_b_207331.html

I post this in a spirit of fairness & to promote reflection on all sides.

But really, Diane, the reason why Easterly's name was tagged in the ONE Blog post was probably because his name appeared in Sach's article.

ONE is under no obligation to post anything more than what it chooses - just as Dambisa's social media outlets position her in the best light also.

There's plenty of "blame" to go around.

All the Best, debbie :)

I'm disappointed that One has not included Bill Easterly's response either, especially since you have Jeff Sachs' piece tagged with his name also.

I'm a little disappointed that Dr. Sachs would engage in personal attacks, but oh well, I guess you just never know people's motivations. Here is an even better response from Dr. Moyo., also on the HuffPo, hopefully, in the interest of debate, One will post her article. (I'm not holding my breath)

Keep it up, Professor Sachs - especially seeing that Ms. Moyo loves to quote the fact that she has been a student of yours. Now the professor is correcting his student. (lol)

I could say more here in this thread but I won't for diplomacy's sake.

ALWAYS FOREVER, ONE, debbie :)

Fantastic article! The idea that the ultra-poor of the world simply need trade and economics is insane. Yes, we need to help the third world get self-sustained economically but it all starts with the basics: food, shelter, clothing, healthcare, education, etc. Thank-you for this article.
