Reuters: New U.S. trade chief Kirk meets WTO boss Lamy
New U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk held talks on Tuesday with the head of the World Trade Organization (WTO) as part of his visit to Geneva to hear the views of America’s trading partners. President Barack Obama’s administration is conducting a review of trade policy, and Kirk’s meetings will feed into that.

Financial Times: US takes human rights seat at UN
The US was elected on Tuesday to the United Nations Human Rights Council, a body it shunned since its creation three years ago, in a further step along President Barack Obama’s path of global re-engagement.

BBC News: Somalia ‘worst drought in decade’
Satellite surveys of rainfall and ground research show the drought’s severity, said UN humanitarian co-ordinator for Somalia, Mark Bowden. He said many cattle were dying from the lack of water, and that this was contributing to nearly half the population suffering from malnutrition.

Ghana Broadcasting Corporation: Children Sanitation Alert
A report from the charity WaterAid says that diarrhea, caused by poor sanitation, is killing many more children than HIV/Aids, tuberculosis and malaria combined. This report highlights what it calls the inequity between the diseases that are killing children and the amounts of money being spent on them.
