Defense Secretary Robert Gates has stated unequivocally that the best way to protect our national security and build a safer more prosperous world, is to invest in the fight against global poverty, right alongside defense and diplomacy.
Unfortunately, North Carolina Senator Kay Hagan doesn’t agree. Yesterday, she publicly called for a freeze to the International Affairs budget which would amount to a devastating $4 billion cut to funds for smart effective programs that are saving lives and spreading prosperity and security in some of the most desperate parts of the world.
If you live in North Carolina, please call Senator Hagan right now. Tell her that as North Carolinians and ONE members, we stand with Secretary Gates and the 150,691 active military he leads in North Carolina, and expect her to support full funding for the International Affairs Budget at the $53.9 billion level that will keep our investment in smart, proven poverty solutions on-track.
