Victory

By Chris Scott

The Senate just passed the Kerry-Lugar Amendment by voice vote restoring all $4 billion to the International Affairs Budget!

Once again, ONE members’ hard work, solid organization, and tireless efforts have helped create real change and political will. Thank you for all you do, and take a minute to give yourselves a big pat on the back.

While today’s victory was huge, the fight against poverty continues:

    Urgent Help appeal,
The only and first female major political party leader of Ethiopia, Ms Birtukan Mideksa was arbitrarily arrested and thrown to life imprisonment for a speech she made. She is a single mother of a four year daughter. She is a lawyer by profession and served as a high court judge in Ethiopia. But, now, faces solitary confinement, no vist is allowed from doctors, Red Cross or other vistors except her mother and daughter. She was in hunger strike for 13 days. She is physically abussed. She is spending her time in 2 by 2 meters irron corrugated cold room.
One.org members, please do something to help this victimized lady(she is called lady liberty among Ethiopians). The dictatorial Meles Zenawi regime have been called upon to release Birtukan and other political prisoners by the international community. Recently, Genocide Watch called up on human rights organizations and democratic countries to investigate the Meles Zenawi regime of Ethiopia for Genocide and crimes against humanity.
As a one.org member, i expect immidiate measures. I for example suggest an awareness campaign and RELEASE BIRTUKAN NOW effort.
Please feel free to contact me/or one.org for questions, suggestions or commnets.
    Thank you.

I appreciate the efforts made by this organization. But I greatly fear these efforts will be in vain if we do not shift our focus to the bigger picture at this time. The United States is standing at the precipice of disaster, as are several other prominent countries. The G20 is meeting to discuss “solutions” to the global financial crisis. Not only was this crisis engineered, but so to will be the solution. I do not consider myself a conspiracy theorist, I just read the news and try to read between the lines. The G20 will certainly be considering a new world currency to replace the dollar, as well as putting the financial institutions of nations beneath the power of the IMF or World Bank.

They are doing this because the U.S. has effectively destroyed the dollar. Just days ago the Federal Reserve pumped one TRILLION dollars into the economy. I guarantee you that money isn’t sitting around in the treasury – nor is the money for the TARP, TALF and financial stimulus packages from the Government. The printing presses are firing up. This is the last ditch effort by our leaders to save this economy. It has NEVER worked in the history of mankind. We are sailing in unknown waters and facing devastating consequences for these actions. If this fails, this country will go through a depression that will make the Great Depression look small in comparison.

I hope very much that I am wrong. I also hope very much that those who support ONE and its members, understand the implications of what is happening at this very moment.

We could very soon be among the poverty stricken people that you all have fought to help. I ask that all who care for this country and support the good it has done, to open your eyes. Recognize the corruption and control that are destroying this nation. We must come together to fight for our values and beliefs before the storms hits.

    Peace, understanding, and love.

I was outraged when I first heard that $4 million was cut from the International Affairs Budget. How could we continue to spend on needless things when others are dying around the world simply because they do not have food or don’t have access to basic healthcare?! I could not stand by and watch this happen. I had to take action. I have to admit I often let doubt creep in and think how could one phone call make a difference. One call may not make a difference, but when you multiply all those calls it shakes ground. Thanks to all who made it possible. I can’t wait to see this money put into action!

What this victory means is that we have a chance to maintain the momentum of our movement for Africa – to save MORE lives, to bring education to MORE children and to give the African People a helping hand as THEY build their governments and their countries.

We, AS ONE, are not Africa’s Savior and we are well aware of that.

What we are is Africa’s Friend and will always be – no matter who is dismissive of what we do. We know that our international movement to end extreme poverty IS working and from the vote this afternoon in the Senate we can BREATHE freely that our Congress will keep to its commitments to Africa and not let the Continent down.

THANK YOU, ONE – AND THANK YOU TO THE U.S. SENATE.

The world’s poorest people should NOT have to starve and suffer and die because the world’s bankers have let us all down.

The One Organization and the many voices actively participating, demonstrate once again one voice leads to many evoking effective political change with global implications. Calling one’s own Senate representative may be considered a waste of time in certain circles, or even may prove to be intimidating to a wary public whose faith in the rules of politics stand on shaky ground. President Obama and the new administration may have in fact restored the public faith that one voice can effect the outcome for millions of people.

    Janey,

Because this was a unanimous voice vote, there’s actually no record of votes and the amendment was considered adopted without dissent. In effect, there was so much support for the amendment opponents decided it was futile to hold a recorded vote they knew they’d lose. It’s a sign of our power as ONE members and concerned Americans.

Feel good about your activism, but unless you get beyond your “feel good” blogging and actually spend your own money and volunteer your own time, I will not have respect for you. Time to move beyond the filthy, evil monetary system. It has had its day but is now really no longer relevant due to the state of today’s technology. Robots can and should do it all. We humans can and should fulfill our true destiny and live free, create, discover, and love. Free energy is available to all the world. That means free food, water, housing, and medical. Think I’m crazy? Well, for those of you who do not believe me, you just keep on praying to your gods, and go to your stupid churches, fill out your sample voting ballets, eat your fried, fast foods, and keep sending your kids off to war to kill innocents for the corporations. I say to you mindless, spiritually unfulfilled, unenlightened, ignorant half-wits …..good luck, for I hold no animosity toward you, only pity. I also have hope due to the rise of the internet. We really have to protect the internet. I wish you all well. Thank you.

Bravo on increasing the funding. But speaking as an international development professional, I can tell you that the real winners here are the beltway-bandits in Washington who make a fortune off USAID contracts. Sorry, I don’t mean to be negative about this funding increase. But the amount of money that actually dribbles down to the people who need help in poor countries is miniscule. Remember, USAID offers ‘technical assistance’ … which is fine. But ‘technical assistance’ almost always means the same pack of Washington D.C. based firms are building their coffers with convoluted project management offices – stacked with expensive labor. Rarely does USAID offer money to a local NGO without several layers of American contracters on top of it. I’d say to make a real difference here, we ONE advocates need to start rattling the cages and shining a light on how this money is spent.

The first step in achieving the international diplomacy necessary to change the U.S. war monger image that has been created in the last several years is to show that we are creditable and we really mean what we say when we state that we chose PEACE. This legislation is a gigantic step in that direction, but it still only one step. Being reliable, showing continuity and most important following up on this initial step is critical. Like a good farmer, our leaders must be willing to cultivate the fields before they can expect to achieve the outstanding crops the American people desire and deserve.

    Heather,
I agree with your synopsis/warning about the world’s poor and our own economic crisis at hand, the effect of which we have not fully felt. It seems as though the rest of the commentators due to attention span deficit syndrome or blissful ignorance found your statement to long or boring to read.

It has never occured to them that they themselves may be in the same predicament due the expansion of government into their lives, increasing un-employment and higher taxes. (mandates) They probably have never read accounts of most charitible monies actually never reaching the people for which it was intended. Instead winding up in the hands of the corrupt governments and their militaries.

“Charity begins at home.” This charitable act of ONE’s amounts to no more than giving away unbacked, worthless pieces of paper.

Although, I try to remain optimistic, it seems as if we’re getting nowhere fast. HOPEFULLY SOMETHING WILL CHANGE FOR THE BETTER. Now, can we also focus on the issues here in America as well. Did you hear the recent news about the young man (approx. 20 years old) that murdered two of his siblings and critically injured a third one because he was suffering from depression for not being able to get a JOB. Not to mention the other countless crimes being done against our children (which I think is directly related to the economic situation). SAVE AMERICA’S BABIES!! They did not ask for this mess.

Heather,Rick and the like,YOU are what is wrong with America.SELFISH to the end.I would think that because of the situation we are in , as far as the economy is concerned, that Americans would at last understand EXACTLY what it is like for others to be suffering and want to help even MORE.We are so used to being “comfortable” that anything to disrupt or threaten that, evokes absolute fear in us.Those nations have been suffering for so long, why can’t WE suffer for just a bit now and let them enjoy some of what we have become complacent with ? Who do we think we are that we are not suppose to endure hardships?Don’t you know that when you give when you CANNOT afford to do so, it is then that you are truly being virtuous? There’s nothing heroic about giving when you have the means to do so!!! (What real sacrifice is there?) When we give freely and with our hearts GOD will reward us.As a result of what ONE has accomplished I am more confident that He will shine his light on America and we will shine once again. We all have to start putting our fellow man before ourselves and not adopt the attitudes of AIG and the like. It’s through greed, selfishness and a total disregard for people’s well being that we are where we are!!Take heed America, take a long hard look at your “Me’”and ”I’ mentality.Try to substitute with “We” and “Us”.We all are deserving of our basic needs in life, whether American , African or whatever, and none more so than the other.

When I first saw the One.org television commercial a couple of years ago with short clips of people endorsing this effort, people from Pat Robertson to George Clooney, some people who probably couldn’t stand to be in the same room with each other for very long, I was intrigued. I immediately visited the sight and signed up.

I consider myself a rock-ribbed, paleo-conservative, neo monarchist, (right). One.org is the most non-partisan, non-political help organization on the planet. No one should be hesitant to sign up and at least listen.

Thier effort for Africa, in particular, is particulary laudable. Africa is the birthplace of the human race. Africa may very well be the salvation of the human race. But, the most important natural resource in Africa are the people. Not for how we can exploit them, as was done in the past. But how we can learn from them. Africa and it’s people are indeed a “world worth saving.”

    Thank One.org.

What great news, I have always admired Senator Kerry tremendously and felt it was a pity he did not have a stint as president.. Well done to both senators and thank you for helping to restore America’s image as a caring, good big brother and no longer a bullying, cruel one.
