To Robert M.: Yes, THAT Madeleine Albright. To lend a bit more history to the issue of her unfortunate "worth it" comment, below is what Wikipedia has posted. Based on her overall performance while Secretary and there after, I think her contributions to tonight's panel may be very worthwhile.

"She was also criticized for defending the sanctions of Iraq under Saddam Hussein in a 1996 interview with Lesley Stahl on CBS's 60 Minutes. When asked by Stahl with regards to effect of sanctions against Iraq: "We have heard that half a million children have died. I mean, that's more children than died in Hiroshima. And, you know, is the price worth it?" Albright replied: "I think this is a very hard choice, but the price — we think the price is worth it."[6] Not until years later did she express regret for this remark.[citation needed] In her 2003 autobiography she wrote,

I must have been crazy; I should have answered the question by reframing it and pointing out the inherent flaws in the premise behind it. […] As soon as I had spoken, I wished for the power to freeze time and take back those words. My reply had been a terrible mistake, hasty, clumsy, and wrong. […] I had fallen into a trap and said something that I simply did not mean. That is no one’s fault but my own.[7]

This "trap" has been identified as a loaded question.[8][9] Her failure to "refram[e the question] and point[] out [its] inherent flaws"[7] has been called "the non-denial heard 'round the world"[10] because "by not challenging the statistic, Albright inadvertently lent credence to it."[8] When asked about her response in 2005, Albright said "I never should have made it, it was stupid," and that she still supported the concept of tailored sanctions.[11]"

Thank you ONE for sending out a notice about "A Powerful Noise."

PLEASE NOTE: The ONE email stated that the event begins at 5:30pm PST, but Fandango has the start time for Las Vegas listed as 8pm. May want to get them to correct the PST time online and get them to contact all who have purchased tickets via Fandango regarding time correction. Eager to view the documentary and panel discussion. Fan of Nic Kristof's work.... Bravo! to all those involved.

Kathy, I'm entltled to my opinions. I put it out there to the organizers, I received responses - both emails and phone calls and I'm satisfied with their explanations which were handled respectfully and I do not need you to speak on their behalf because they've already handled it in a professional manner. I don't know who you are or why you think you have to address this issue for us. You want to see the movie, I applaud you. I won't and a number of our women here won't either. That is our prerogative. I do not appreciate your calling our decision short-sighted and I feel offended askling us to get over it. I don't want to be nasty on this forum and like I said, those who matter already addressed this issue. Good luck to your daughter. A lot of us are doing things for this organization quietly and don't think it necessary to announce it to the world. Enjoy the movie.

to all those objecting to the cost of the movie and the share that CARE recieves - get over it! I think Emily has given you sufficient answers regarding the cost of distribution etc - now go see the movie!! My daughter is currently writing her college thesis on the very subject that "A Powerful Noise" covers and is planning to continue her work with woman's issue after graduation. I continually applaud her efforts and her interest in these matters.

I'm sorry Asiedua will not be seeing the movie with the rest of us - her protest is short sited.

The Pacific Time (PT) showing will begin at 8 PM PT. So Jo Y, that's 8 PM your time. It will end around 10:30 PT.

It will be tape-delayed because 8 PM PT is about 11 PM ET (Eastern Time, which is the time zone in which the panel will actually be happening). So you will not be seeing the event live, unfortunately.

Regarding the questions submitted to panelists:

People can submit questions by going to: http://www.apowerfulnoise.org/questions.html and emailing their question to comments@apowerfulnoise.org (including their name, city and state). "Only select questions may be answered due to time constraints."

Can I have clarification of the "Pacific Time" showing? It will be tape delayed. It begins at 8:00pmPT and says it's 2 1/2 hours. So at 10:30pmPT, do we then view a tape delay of the discussion??? and if so, then what time does that end?

Whitley:
It is very unlikely that the "talent" will change. You know, somebody could have an accident and not be able to make it, anything is possible -- that's all the disclaimer is meant to cover. At this point, it is the full intent of each of the advertised panelists to appear.

Asiedua and others with concerns about the film proceeds:

Unfortunately, it takes a great deal of money to distribute a film in 458 theaters across the country. Remember that to secure that time and space, not to mention the technology needed to live-broadcast the panel discussion to 458 theaters nationwide, we must compete with studios large and small each pushing bigger-budget movies. This is the reality of the medium we have chosen, and the proportion of proceeds going back to the theaters is simply the cost of putting our film on their screens. Otherwise, this inspiring, beautiful film might have no theatrical release at all.

Although we would all like to devote a greater percentage of proceeds to CARE's excellent work, we hope the awareness raised and individuals motivated by the event will eventually do a lot more for those we seek to help than just giving them a larger share of revenues up front.

Remember that this event is being sponsored by a coalition of non-profits. I assure you, we are doing the best we can for the causes in which we all believe. And we are proud to be able to bring this film to you even if we have to share the proceeds with the theaters.

Thanks for your understanding and patience.

I have not received any mail from the organizers about the percentage going to the distributors and the theatres. This is a rip off and I have decided not to go watch this movie as much as it pains me. I think you could have negotiated a fifty-fifty at least. More often than not, we support events like this only to have the bulk of the money in someone else's pocket. This is not fair. Reconsider. I am sending mail to the women here in my state asking them to send you a letter of protest and if possible not to watch this movie. Thanks.
