Over the weekend, ONE volunteers participated in the Miami Poverty Conference, which took place at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. The conference is a brand new initiative started by University of Miami students to educate members of the community and students from universities and colleges in the Miami-Dade area about the growing problem of poverty in their community and throughout the World.
Miami ONE Member, Alix Gordon and I led an interactive workshop to teach the students about ONE and our work in Florida to increase awareness about extreme poverty and preventable diseases, especially in Africa and Latin America. We talked about the different ways they can help achieve change through advocacy and encouraged each person to reach out to their elected leaders to ensure that America does not forget the World’s most vulnerable people.
After the conference, the University held a benefit concert, featuring poets, live bands and other artists who helped draw attention to the plight of those living in poverty. We set up a ONE information table at the concert and were able to talk to many more students about ONE and upcoming volunteer opportunities in the community.
Overall, the Miami Poverty Conference not only provided a forum to educate students about the growing problem of poverty, but also inspired students to actively engage in the community on these issues.

What a great story. I am so glad to hear that these volunteers are helping the poverty stricken people in our own country. Many people don’t realize how needy some people in our country are.

Serving others means serving God’s children, who are our brothers and sisters. We can serve others in a multitude of ways, including praying to God for them and praying for the knowledge to know how to serve them.
It takes charity, humility, patience, and diligence to continually serve God by serving others, but the Lord has promised us His marvelous gift of eternal life if we do:
“And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it” (Luke 9:23-24). bbq grills

- Could capitalism be the cause of this, as with capitalism it seems the rich do get richer. I think an attitude of sharing along with a “capitlistic mindset” is what’s needed.

Wake up people. Your FEDERAL Government doesn’t care. You send them money, they give it away willy nilly to the underserving. $9 billion to Chrysler flushed down the toilet? And how did this help America? Perhaps it’s time to put the power back in the hands of the people and let the states decide what happens?

Thank goodness. There is no greater problem in this nation than poverty. Miami is a beautiful city, but there are major problems that need to be addressed — thank you for the work you guys do!

I could not agree more! People belonging to other countries, esp. the third world countries feel that ours is the wealthiest nation in the world, but as they say, the other side of the world always seem fascinating from a distance, that is, UNTIL you visit it! I am really very glad that there are some nice people out here helping those who truly need their help! Wish more people were like them!

NO matter how much we try to hide it, the fact remains that even in developed countries, at least 70% of the citizens suffer from poverty or are below the poverty line. Our so called “technological progress” or “infrastructure” is useless if they fail to eliminate this demon from our country. It is good that Miami is fighting poverty and I feel the other universities should follow the lead!
